Steel Magnolias Review

"I find it amusing. Men are supposed to be made out of steel or something. I just sat there. I just held Shelby's hand. There was no noise, no tremble, just peace. Oh god. I realize as a woman how lucky I am. I was there when that wonderful creature drifted into my life and I was there when she drifted out. It was the most precious moment of my life. " M'Lynn -

Steel Magnolias is unquestionably my favorite movie. I own it on VHS and I own it on DVD and if I catch it on television I watch it yet again.

Set in Louisiana Steel Magnolias centrally focuses on the mother daughter relationship of M'Lynn and Shelby but it does a wonderful job of revealing the relationships between friends, spouses and neighbors.

While I don't share the Southern heritage these women do I am from a family of strong women. As in the movie friends, faith and family can get you through anything. Through in some humor and tears and that is what makes it real.

What can be more difficult for a mother than to see her child hurt or suffer? It is almost as hard to watch a friend going through that with their child. M'Lynn has the strong support of her husband and friends as she deals with her daughter Shelby's diabetes related illnesses. When tragedy strikes M'Lynn's friends are there with hugs and humor to see her through.

The wonderful storyline is enhanced by the all star cast of Sally Field, Tom Skerrit, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Darryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, Shirley MacLaine, Sam Shepard and Dylan McDermott.

I cry every time I watch Steel Magnolias. If you need a good cry or just want to see a terrific movie with an all star cast you can purchase the movie online from Amazon.com for $8.99 by clicking here. The DVD is also available from CD Universe for $10.45 by clicking here. In addition to those two it can also be found at Barnes and Noble for $13.49 just click here.

If you are truly a diehard Steel Magnolias fan and live near (or plan on visiting) Louisiana you can stay at The Steel Magnolia House a bed and breakfast in Natchitoches. This 1930's era home has a rich Civil War history as well as pop culture history of being the site where Steel Magnolias was filmed.

So sit back and have some armadillo cake for Drum, juice for Shelby and tissues for me because I always cry at the end.

I am Southern and Steel Magnolias is one of my all time favorites too. It's hysterical that you have it on VHS, DVD and still watch if it comes on television.
