I was appalled and more than mildly disgusted when I heard that Stephen Colbert was going to appear before Congress to testify on the immigration issue.
"For what?" I couldn't help but wonder, "To spew his sarcastic condescension for the express purpose of inflating his already over-inflated ego? Really? This isn't a joke?"
As it turned out, it was a joke and the joke was on us.
I've never been a fan of Stephen Colbert and his sophomoric display on Friday is exactly why. First of all, he's not funny. I've only occasionally heard him say anything even mildly amusing and it wasn't even on his television show.
His mocking arrogance is offensive and unlike his counterpart, Jon Stewart, the man has never displayed any real understanding of the issues nor has he been able to intelligently debate them. He's about narcissistic self-promotion, first and foremost.
I didn't watch the crude and vile display that everyone is reporting about today. I presumed it would be nothing but offensive, childish, locker-room humor and as usual, he didn't disappoint. I am absolutely delighted, however, that who and what Stephen Colbert really is, was on display, front and center.
Though I seriously doubt that he will see anything wrong in how he handled himself and will offer no apology whatsoever. He will likely use this to further mock and deride our government, this country and the American people and he will justify it by calling it "his job." Yeah, right.
I think it was rocker John Mellencamp who famously sang, "Hey, calling it your job ol' hoss sure don't make it right." Indeed.
