Steps to Achieve a Beautiful Self-tan

Nickole Hogan
Many people don't want to try self-tanners at home because they are scared of looking orange. Well a lot has changed since the fake orange tans of the '90s. Now there are some great products and techniques you can use to achieve a beautiful golden glow from home. I use these techniques at my salon and my clients love it!

Supplies Needed:

1. Large Towels

2. Body Scrub-Coarse

3. Body Scrub-Fine

4. Dry Brush

5. Moisturizing Cream

6. Toma's Body Butter (comes with one set of gloves)

Steps to achieve a beautiful self-tan at home.

1. 1. Clip your hair out of the way.

2. 2. Stand shoulder width apart. Beginning at the back-top of your body, begin the dry brush process. Remember the brush is abrasive so adjust pressure according to your comfort. Use half-moon motions to remove dead skin. Continue process throughout entire body. Be extra cautious through the front of the body because it the skin is more sensitive.

3. 3. Now apply body scrub of your choice. Begin with the finer scrub first. Using your hands, apply the scrub starting at the back-top of the body. Be aware of sensitive areas. Use circular smooth motions. You can always ask a friend of spouse to help you reach difficult areas.

4. 4. Take a dry towel and wrap around your hand. Gently brush off excess scrub particles. Make sure you get all crystals off.

5. 5.With a warm towel, wipe down your entire body.

6. 6. Let your skin air dry.

7. 7. Once your skin is dry, apply a moisturizer all over your body. Pay particular attention to your elbows, knees and feet. This is an especially important step. Make sure you rub in all of the moisturizer.

8. 8. Now put on gloves and begin applying the Toma's tanning body butter. (Can be found at most Sally Beauty Supply stores.) Use sparingly on feet, knees and elbows. Allow to dry for a few minutes and apply a 2nd coat if necessary. You can tell when it is blended when it absorbs into the skin.

9. 9. Allow to dry before you get dressed. Do not wear good clothes after because the color can transfer to clothing.

10. 10. The self-tanner will darken within 2 hours and not to shower within 7 hours. Some bronzer will come off when showering. That is normal. Always keep your skin moisturized to keep your tan up. You can do the self-tanner as much as you need. Make sure to follow all directions on the box of your self-tanner. Now you have a beautiful glow without the damaging rays of the sun or a tanning bed.
