Keep All Records
There is always a possibility of changes being made after tax return filing, including the chance of being audited. Basic tax information has to be kept for at least three years, business tax information has to be kept for five to seven years, and large purchases need to be kept until they are no longer needed. For instance, if a house is purchased on a ten year loan, then the records should be kept for the entire ten years that it can be used on tax returns, as well as for three years following. Never be caught without the records if information is audited.
Check the Status
Most areas have a website that a person can log into to check the status of their return. Check this every few days to see if any problems have occurred, and if they have, contact the appropriate agency immediately. Most issues can be resolved within a matter of minutes if the person filing the tax return is prompt on resolving them.
