Steps to Making a Halloween Scarecrow

Kid-Romeo
A scarecrow doesn't just have to be for a farm anymore. Scarecrows are usually made to scare off animals or evil spirits from farms. The main animal a scarecrow was used to scare off is the crow. Crows always attacked farms and killed the produce. When this happened the scarecrow was created to get rid of them. This was what a scarecrow is used for in most places across the world. Scarecrows can be used for decorations also on or off a farm. On Halloween most people use a scarecrow for fun decorations around their house. Making a scarecrow is also not that difficult, and can be made in various ways. In this article, I will discuss how to make a scarecrow that's perfect for Halloween.

The first topic I will discuss in making a Halloween scarecrow is the supplies. There are various ways to make a scarecrow. Most supplies will vary among everyone depending on their style of scarecrow that they wish to make. For this particular scarecrow we will use just a few supplies. First supply you will need is some leaves, straw, old rags, or lots of cotton. This is used to stuff the scarecrow and make him look real. The next set of supplies you will need are some old clothes for your scarecrow to wear. You will need pants or overalls with a shirt for a guy scarecrow. If you're making a girl scarecrow you will need a dress. You will need a hat for your scarecrow, usually a big straw hat works best. Some other supplies that are needed are old boots, a pumpkin or pillow, a pillow sack, gloves, string, markers, nails, and knife. If you're scarecrow will stand up you will need a big wood post. You can also just sit your scarecrow down around your house. Now after you have your supplies you can begin to build your scarecrow. Some supplies may vary depending on the kind of scarecrow you want to make.

The next topic I will discuss is how to put the scarecrow together. Putting your scarecrow together is not that difficult and can be lots of fun. If you have kids it will be even more fun to do it with them. First you will want to figure out what you want your scarecrow to look like. You will first start building your scarecrows body. To create a scarecrows body we will need a shirt to be stuffed. The easiest way I have done this is with overalls and the shirt being stuffed. Take the overalls and put the shirt inside of the overalls. Now you will want to start stuffing the scarecrow with leaves, straws, and or old clothes. You will want to fill in from the shirt, down to the legs of the overalls. You will want to fill up the whole body very good so the scarecrow looks firm. To make sure the shirt stays in the overalls securely use some string around the waist to keep it tightened. Now after your scarecrow is all stuffed we can make the hands and feet.

For the hands of your scarecrow you will want to place some old gloves where the hands should go. Leave some extra stuffing out of the sleeves for the gloves to go on. Then you will take the gloves and put them on as hands on the scarecrow. Now that you have the gloves on you will fasten them with some string to make sure their tight. Now that the hands are done we can move on to the feet. You will leave out some extra straw for the boots to go on like we did with the sleeves. Now once you put on the boots we will tie them one tight like we did with the sleeves. Now that we have the body done we will move on to the head.

Now with the head there are many different ways to do this. You can use a jack o lantern, a pillow, a stuffed pillow case, or anything else you can imagine. If you use a pumpkin head for your scarecrow it will be heavy. You will then have to have your scarecrow be sat down and or leaned against something. A standing scarecrow couldn't have a pumpkin head because it would not be able to stay on. If you use a pumpkin head you would design it to be how scary you want it to be. Then you would place it on top of your scarecrow, and sit it next to a chair or flat wall surface. At the back of the pumpkin head you may want to fasten it to a chair or wall, so it will not fall off.

Now if you're going to have your pumpkin standing up we will use a pillow case.

You will want to get a white pillow case and create a design on it. You will want to make a face on the pillow case anyway you like. You can be as creative as you like with the pillow case using markers, paint, and so on. After you create your face for the scarecrow you will stuff the pillow case. You will want to stuff the pillow case just like you did the body. After the pillow case is stuffed attach it to the top of the body. Then you will secure the pillow case to the body with some string. Make sure you make it very tight and secure so the head does not fall off. Now to top it off you will want to place a big straw hat on top of the scarecrows head. You can tie the hat on around the head and chin so it stays in place. Now after this is all done you should have a cool looking scarecrow. You can also add any accommodations that you will like to enhance your scarecrow.

Now that your scarecrow is done you can pick him up and nail him onto the pole. Nailing his arms, legs, and head to the pole is the easiest and fastest way to secure the scarecrow. If you choose to not put the scarecrow up on a pole you can sit him anywhere you like. If you're going to sit your scarecrow down, do not stuff the waist too much. So with this and many other ways is how you can make a Halloween scarecrow.
