First and most obviously, if you have not registered, go register on the Do Not Call Registry. This helps for many of the standard sales calls and will prevent headaches in the future. This will not prevent government agencies, charities or others that you have done business with in the past from contacting you. But, it is a good start.
Next, do what you fear most and answer the phone. It seemed like a bad idea and plays right into their hands, but it is the only way to get results. You must speak directly with the person. You should be polite but firm with your demands. Ask to be added to a no call list. Essentially, you are requiring them to put you on a business-specific list that removes you from sales calls. Most telemarketers will agree to this in trouble you no more. If you get a stubborn one, it is time to escalate to the next level. Ask to speak to a manager and once again demand to be added to a no call list.
If you are still receiving calls after the previous two steps, you must begin talking to whomever you can that is high up. You may have to resort to some serious threats. The first is if they are currently in business with you, you will cancel your relationship with that company. The second is that you report them to the appropriate government agencies. Once you have repeatedly asked to not be bothered, these companies are obligated to comply. Know your rights and you'll be fine.
Following these steps can lead to a much more enjoyable home life. We all loathe being disturbed by constantly ringing phone. Sure, this may take some work up front, but the results are well worth it. Remember, you are in control of your home and your phone. Do not let others bully you or try to tell you what your rights are. Be polite, but remember to exercise your rights when appropriate.
