Steps to Take in Earning an Online Elementary Education Degree

Alternative Elementary Education Degree Has Built-in Flexibility and Self-Pacing

Karen LoBello
Online degree programs are gaining ground in today's technological world. If you would like to earn an elementary education degree-and you're looking for flexibility-an online degree program might be your solution. Some of my teaching colleagues received their Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education degrees through University of Phoenix's alternate route. They felt as well-prepared for their teaching careers as their counterparts who had been educated in conventional brick-and-mortar colleges. There are points to consider and steps to follow if you're considering an online elementary education program.

Do Your Homework

Before embarking on an online elementary education degree, talk to other individuals who have chosen this degree path. The teaching profession isn't for everyone. It requires patience, organization, creativity, and a sense of humor. Interact with students and teachers. Volunteer to help at an elementary school where you can experience how children behave in a setting away from their families. See if this career and this alternative degree program is for you.

Decide on an Online Program Type

You can choose a self-paced program, which allows 100% of the coursework to be completed online at your convenience. If you prefer peer interaction, you can blend traditional and online classes. Some online universities have incorporated programs in which a group of students works through the elementary education online classes together. This requires adhering to set time frames. There will be hands-on classroom training, such as student teaching, in all cases.

Contact the State Department of Education

Become familiar with the requirements for obtaining teaching credentials in your state. You must be certified to teach in a public school. A bachelor's degree is the base prerequisite. There are generally required competency tests, such as the Praxis. Make certain the online elementary education program you're considering is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and matches the conditions of your state.

Talk to a University Counselor

Speak to an academic adviser at the university. You should understand the parameters of their online elementary degree program. You may be asked to choose an additional specialty area such as reading, math or ESL. Discuss your options with the counselor. You can also talk to a representative in the financial aid office in order to investigate possible scholarships or loans.

Complete an Application

Once you've decided upon a particular elementary degree program, fill out the application. This can normally be done online. You will also be required to submit grade transcripts and college test scores.

Expect These Classes

You will take general classes at the onset. As you progress, your schedule will include courses in educational psychology and philosophy. You will study classroom management and methods of teaching. Since elementary teachers cover a wide spectrum of subjects, you will take courses that address each facet, including the teaching of math, language arts, science, and social studies. The programs include visits to elementary schools in your area for observation and practice-based classwork. There will be a student-teaching component, generally during your final semester, although colleges are increasingly integrating prospective teachers into classroom settings much sooner. Classroom experiences are coordinated by university personnel and school administrators in your locale.

Design Your Time Frame

It generally takes four years to earn a traditional bachelor's degree in elementary education; an online degree could take considerably less time. It is best to map out the entire curriculum. This will allow you to view the course requirements in their entirety, and will help you to set up a reasonable plan of action.

Stay Focused

If you are earning an online elementary education degree, you will need to be self-motivated. Coursework generally involves online communication, videos, chat forums, and interactive web links. In addition, there will lots of reading, writing, lesson planning, and research. Stay in contact with professors through emails and phone calls. Plan ahead to meet your deadlines.
