First of all, you need to decide if you are throwing this party alone or if others will be helping you. If you have siblings, this would be something great that you could do together. If you don't have siblings or they do not live in the area, perhaps you have some friends who want to honor their mothers as well and you all could get together and have a party for your mothers.
Secondly, you need to decide on a location. Should you have the party at your own home? Or perhaps you would prefer to have it outdoors at a park or a picnic area or maybe at a restaurant.
Once you have secured a location and know what you are working with, you need to begin thinking about decorations. You may wish to choose a theme and have all your decorations match that theme. For example, if you are having the party with friends and their Mothers, a Mother's Day tea would be a great idea. You could make that more formal, with table linens, fancy tea cups, etc. Or you may wish to do something more fun, like a luau theme. If you don't want to have a themed party, that's OK. You could decorate with some simple flowers or even photographs of you and your Mom from your childhood.
Next you need to think about food. If you are having a themed party, you will probably want your food to match your theme. If you are going with the tea party theme, then finger sandwiches, scones, etc. would be great. You need to consider the time of day when deciding on what types of food to serve. If you are having a brunch, then you'd want more breakfast type foods. If you are having the party in the afternoon, then you wouldn't have to serve a whole meal, but instead just have some finger foods like a vegetable tray, fruit tray, etc. You may also wish to have a cake or even cupcakes which can be decorated very elegantly.
Finally, you should think about gifts. Get a corsage for your mom and pin it on her when she arrives. If you are doing a party with friends, then you may want to give each Mother a favor to remember the party by. If not, you may just want to give your mom something meaningful.
A Mother's Day party is a great way to honor and celebrate your mother. Have fun!
