Spielberg Will Receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award

According to a news release, the Board of Directors of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced that they will honor Steven Spielberg at the 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards January 13, 2008 at 8PM EST on NBC. Spielberg will be given the Cecil B. Demille Award for "his outstanding contribution to the entertainment field", according to Josh Brolin at the press conference on November 14, 2007.

The list of movies Spielberg collected Golden Globe awards for include: Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, E.T., The Extra-Terrestrial, and the foreign language film Letters From Iwo Jima. He received awards for both the Best Director and for Best Motion Picture (Drama) for several of these. He also has been nominated for 12 other films. Spielberg also won Oscars for the Best Director and Best Picture for his film Schindler's List and for Best Director of Saving Private Ryan. In addition, Schindler's List won two Academy Awards for Spielberg. Schindler's List and The Color Purple both won the Director's Guild of America Award, as did Munich, E.T., The Extra-Terrestrial, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Empire of the Sun, Jaws, and Amistad. These films garnered Spielberg the title of Director having the most DGA Awards and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Director's Guild of America, as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute.

Spielberg's next film will be Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which is slated for release May 22, 2008. It will star Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett and Shia LaBeouf.

Steven Spielberg was born December 18, 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He started his film career while still a teen-ager. In 1968, he began production of a film called Amblin. It had a budget of $15,000, part of which was donated by his friend Dennis Hoffman. Part of the deal was that Spielberg direct the film with no compensation. According to Wikipedia, Spielberg told a crew-member that he vomited every day before he went to the set. The film led to Spielberg signing a seven-year contract with Universal, after a Universal vice president saw the film. With that deal Spielberg made history as the youngest director ever to be signed with such a prominent studio.

Spielberg has many philanthropic endeavors. He established the Righteous Persons Foundation with profits from his critically acclaimed Shindler's List and founded Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation. He is also chairman emeritus of the Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation.

He deserves this award!!..The only Great Director around as far as I am concerned!..some of the writers now seem to make the movies sort of "stupid"..He seems to be the only director that makes a "real" movie!..Great Article!!
