Steven Tyler Falls Off Stage in Sturgis

Aerosmith Battles with Injuries as the Band Continues to Tour

When Steven Tyler of Aerosmith falls, the crowd goes silent. Steven Tyler gets right back up from the fall, the crowd cheers wildly. Entertaining the crowd after the sound system failed while performing "Love In An Elevator," or so the story has been related, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith did an inadvertent reverse stage dive during Wednesday night's show in Sturgis, South Dakota. The 61-year-old rocker was dancing, spun around, and stepped backward -- right off the edge of the stage. Landing on two fans, his fall broken, Steven Tyler was more shaken up than anything, or so he thought, and security immediately hustled him backstage.

Mike Sanborn, spokesman for the Buffalo Chip Campground, which hosts the popular annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, told MTV, "He does a lot of dancing on the stage and he does a lot of stuff with his mic stand. He put his stand down and twirled around and stepped backwards off the stage." Sanborn also said that the singer was laughing and joking after his fall as he boarded the helicopter that flew him to Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Steven Tyler was found to have suffered minor head and neck injuries and a shoulder injury in the fall.

No word on whether or not the Aerosmith fans that Steven Tyler broke his fall on were injured or not, but knowing the typical rock fan, they would have been honored regardless.

Steven Tyler's fall at Sturgis was the latest in a series of mishaps to befall the band. Aerosmith had to delay launching their world tour in Venezuela because Joe Perry, the band's virtuoso lead guitarist, developed an infection in his knee from a knee replacement he had had in 2008. Seven shows were canceled last month due to injury, rumored to have been a Steven Tyler leg muscle pull. Then Tom Hamilton, the band's bassist, had to take time off to recuperate from a non-invasive surgery. Guitarist Brad Whitford had to have surgery and missed a few concert dates when he hit his head while exiting his Ferrari. And all of that followed a stint in rehab in 2008 for Steven Tyler, who admitted that he had developed a dependency on sleeping pills after surgery on his foot earlier in the year.

And if anyone should think that Steven Tyler's fall is the result of his age, it must be remembered that falling and getting injured is just part of the business. Poison front man Bret Michaels was decked by a lowering prop at this year's Tony Awards. Early reports stated he was bloodied but uninjured, but the hair metal singer actually had his nose broken. And rapper Drake fell during a performance Saturday night, re-injuring an already injured knee during the "America's Most Wanted Tour," which features Lil Wayne and Soulja Boy.
