In my ongoing quest to find herbs that are healing and beneficial to the body, I signed up for a class in Garden herbs for everyday Healing. I had the opportunity to touch and smell many herbs in their natural state and in dried form that were passed around the room. One of those herbs which was the stevia plant was passed around. The plant was dried and I was given the opportunity to take two leaves from the plant to sample. I put the two leaves in a small baggie and continued with the class.
After class, I decided to get a glass of home made iced tea. I requested it without sugar. Then, I suddenly thought about the stevia leaves in the little baggie that I had. When I received my iced tea, right before I was to take a sip of tea I took out one of the stevia leaves and put it in my mouth. I found myself suddenly yelling out "Wow! The leaf fizzled in my mouth and the taste was at least 3 times more potent than sugar. I could not believe what a sweet treat that I had found.
If you're a person who has a sugar free diet or you have a sweet tooth and you crave sweets all the time than this is for you. You can have as much as you like without any worries. I had the leaf in its purest form but I see that stevia is sold in all natural food stores.
Stevia is a natural herbal sweetener and has no calories. From what I learned in class, it can be used in cooking and baking or as a replacement for sugar. And, those of you that have blood sugar problems you can use stevia without any problems or worries. It is a natural sweetener not a sugar.
Maybe these big companies that produce sugary foods and drinks should think of stevia as a sugar replacement. I'm sure this would help in the fight against our country's battle with obesity. And, let us not forget about the schools too.
Let me just say that I am not against sugar. Sugar is all natural too but it comes with calories. Prior to finding stevia, I probably would advise all to opt for all natural sugar instead of artificial sweeteners. But the bottom line is that stevia is better than sugar and without the calories.
