Stewart Cink Takes Open Title

Stewart Cink came to the British Open 2009 at Turnberry with one thing in mind: hold that Claret Jug high in victory. It was probably somewhat of a bitter sweet win for those die hard fans of golf to watch Stewart Cink take the championship. However, it was pure sweetness for Stewart Cink.

Stewart Cink wasn't on many hearts and minds of those watching this year's version of the British open. Instead of Stewart Cink, most were probably cheering for Tom Watson. Unlike Stewart Cink, Watson was making a brilliant run for the cup. At 59, he would have been the oldest to do so, beating out Jack Nicklaus' record. Watson had taken it back in 1977. He is also more than twenty years the senior to Stewart Cink.

What turned out to be a celebration for Stewart Cink was a bit of a heart breaker for those looking to see Watson pull off what most figured he didn't have a chance to pull off. One person who wasn't going to sell Watson short however, was Stewart Cink.

Watson missed a par shot on the 18th, while Stewart Cink made a beautiful bird. By the end of eighteen, both Tom Watson and Stewart Cink were on their way to a four hole playoff to make for a great ending to the 2009 British Open at Turnberry.

Watson had trouble early missing a tee shot wide and having to take a double bogey during the course of the playoff while Stewart Cink stayed solid. By the fourth hole of the playoff, Stewart Cink was able to coast to an early victory while Watson had to be satisfied with second at the 2009 British Open at Turnberry.

Anyone who really appreciates golf can't be all that upset with the result. Stewart Cink is considered one of the nicest guys on the tour and a solid player all around. As a five time winner on the PGA Tour, this is the first major for Stewart Cink at Turnberry and surely one he will treasure for years to come. Stewart Cink has been close before in the major category but this one definitely takes the top of his resume.

When reflecting on the British Open 2009 at Turnberry, there will be mention of the victor, Stewart Cink and the hard work he put in to get there. Despite an incredible showing by Stewart Cink, what most will remember is how the legend, Tom Watson, strolled the greens to cheering crowds and gave all lovers of the game something truly remarkable to cheer about. Congratulations on a tremendous victory to Stewart Cink and Congratulations to Tom Watson for simply being tremendous. Hey, there's always next year.
