Still Looking for Real Halloween Haunts in Utah?

Steven Symes
Halloween now is at the threshold. What will you be doing on the 31st? There are a variety of activities to observe the holiday, from haunted warehouses (or castles, or hospitals, or whatever) to corn mazes and extreme yard displays. Maybe those sorts of things are not for you, or you have done all that you care, or perhaps you are strapped for cash but are still looking for some Halloween scares.

What do you do?

For this Halloween in Utah whether you are in Salt Lake City, Provo, Ogden, or anywhere else in the state, chances are there is some place you can go to get closer to the very roots of the holidays. Be warned, however, such experiences may leave you shaken. Also, not all of these areas are open to the public, so please do not trespass on private property (in other words, get permission first).

And now for the list:

In the Salt Lake City Cemetery, just East of P Street, is located a grave of legendary proportions. Many know it as "Emmo's Grave" but it is actually a mausoleum containing the remains of the late Jacob Moritz. The urn was broken by vandals some time ago. Why is the grave a popular destination? Rumors say Moritz was one of the first devil worshipers to reside in Utah. Where is the proof? Good question, but that does not stop the crowds. The legends go on to say if one is to circle the grave three times repeating "Emmo, Emmo, Emmo" (no word on if correct pronunciation is needed) Jacob Moritz's face will be visible through the window in the mausoleum. Legend also claims vandals did not break the urn, but rather the magic of Moritz did.

Also in Salt Lake City, check out the Shilo Inn and the area surrounding it. Some years back, a woman staying at the hotel threw her children and then herself from their room's window to their death below. Some have reported hearing strange laughing or screams in the indoor pool area late at night.

For those in Magna, rumors say the Pleasant Green Cemetery there has a unique quality. In the cemetery lie the bodies of so many claimed by the nearby mines. It is said the entire area has been known to glow green some nights, creating an ominous atmosphere. Couple this with the warn down old tombstones, and it sets the scene for a classic horror movie.

American Fork Canyon is an area where many have claimed to have experiences. There is a spot at the mouth of the canyon where if a car is put in neutral, pointing uphill, it will actually roll up the hill instead of down. That is not the spookiest part, however. Locals get their thrills by going up to the top of Tibble Fork's parking lot and going round in a circle in their car three times. They claim a hearse will come out of nowhere and chase you. If that is not strange enough, the hearse is said to have red lights.

Checking out a haunted location is a good way to make sure this Halloween is one you will never forget.
