What Sears Holding Company (SHLD) Does

Sears Holding Company (SHLD) is traded on the NasdaqGS. It is a company that owns and operates several department stores including the company's namesake Sears stores, as well as the K-Mart stores, which it recently acquired. The incorporation of Kmart into Sears' family of holdings has not hurt the SHLD stock, but has seemed to add to its stability and overall value of the stock.

52 Week Performance of SHLD

Sears has seen a very bumpy year as far as its stock's value is concerned. The value of SHLD has ranged from 111.64 to 167.95 during the 52 week period ending on 08/22/06. On 08/22/06 the value of SHLD ranged from 140.77 to 142.50. This shows that the stock has not maintained its high 167.95 value, but it has increased substantially from its 111.64 value. The stock's increasing trend is also predicted to continue through the next year where the stock is expected to reach a value of about 173.50.

Historical Performance of SHLD

SHLD is a very stable company. Their stock has experienced minor negative fluctuations during the last three years. However, the general trend for this stock seems to be for positive growth.

SHLD Strengths

The strength and stability of this stock is really due to the quality of merchandise that the Sears Brand is known for. Its quality brand identity has made it a loved company by small communities and large cities alike. Its long operating history has also added to its value creating a nostalgic value that can override higher retail prices in this department store compared to other department stores like Target or Shopko. The final strength that SHLD holds for investors is that it has consistently shown good revenue growth even during times of economic turmoil, compared to their competitors.

SHLD Weaknesses

SHLD really only has a few weaknesses that could impact the overall value of the stock. First it has a lot of employees compared to its competitors. This characteristic may impact the company's overhead costs and reduce its profit margin. Secondly SHLD has a lot of competition. There are a lot of department stores franchises in the market. Sears has to compete with JC Penny's, Target, Walmart, as well as several other private department stores throughout the country.

Sears is cutting cost at every corner and finally shipping customer service overseas as many retailers have already done.
