Since the economy has been down lately and people are working on small budgets, you can make your own stockings. Wal-mart and other stores that carry fabric patterns should have a quick and easy pattern to make stockings. By making your own stockings you can make them any color. Some people have used plaid patterns but there are limitless options for fabric. Do not go over the top with your stockings, you do not want them to look tacky, but have fun with making them. If you want to, you can even have the kids help make them (if you are using a sewing machine, make sure to supervise the kids).
Once you get the basic stockings made, one option to get custom stockings would be to cross-stitch them. One mother cross-stitched a picture of Santa for each of her stockings and then sewed the pictures onto the stockings. If you are crafty, this is a great option for you. A nice perk to this option is that you can customize the colors of the Santa picture to match the favorite color of each person.
So, you do not have the time to make stockings? Don't worry, there are ways to get stockings inexpensively. A quick Ebay search or a Google Product search should produce some inexpensive stockings. If you are worried about having a stocking that is too generic then make sure to make your searches more specific. If one of your kids plays soccer then try searching "soccer stocking." This is a nice way to make the stockings match each person that they are for.
If your family has never done stockings then you can even make them into a gift this year. Wait until the kids are in bed and then fill the stockings and hang them. This will be a nice surprise for the kids and a good way to introduce the new tradition to them. Then next year you can hang the stockings during your regular decorating and fill them on Christmas Eve.
