Stomach Ulcers and Other Stress Related Ailments Are Attacking College Students

There's a disturbing trend in the health of today's younger folks and it's time that someone took notice. Stress, poor dietary habits, and other contributing college-based habits are causing many of today's students to have problems with their digestive health. Specifically, a large increase in the amount of acid in the stomachs of our college kids has led to a larger number of reported incidents of stomach ulcers and upper digestive ailments.

Stomach ulcers have long been thought to be problems associated with late-life health. As you grow older, doctors will tell you, your body begins to wear down and you will be at a much greater risk of developing a stomach ailment. This trend seems to be a failing one, though, as your people are heading out to the stores to stock up on antacids in an attempt to provide some relief to stomach discomfort. Often times, stomach ulcers can begin as a short, nagging pain that feels similar to hunger. Students pass it off as a stomach ache or they grab a bite to eat and it goes away. Slowly, the problems begin to occur more often and over time, people spend more time with this affliction than without it.

What causes stomach ulcers? For our college students, stomach ulcers are the result of terrible dietary habits that leave the stomach without its important lining and coating. When students begin to eat too many greasy or spicy foods and they begin to skip meals with regularity, the doors are opened to this illness that can become quite painful and serious. Interestingly, psychological stress has been linked to many stomach ailments and ulcers are no different. While stress is not the only cause to stomach ulcers, they are a contributing factor in making the problem worse. With more performance pressure being placed on students than ever before, their health seems to be the thing that is really failing.

Stomach ulcers are a tough condition to deal with because they generally don't improve on their own without some dramatic changes. In order to get rid of these painful sores, folks should lose the bad food, the stress, and should begin coating their stomachs in antacids or milk. In some cases, a doctor may subscribe an antibiotic to kill off the bacteria that cause the ulcers. Cases can become serious enough to require surgery if not cared for appropriately.

With more stress-related ailments being reported, parents and teachers need to be more conscious of the amount of performance pressure that is being heaped upon out nation's youth. While they must be expected to reach a certain level in their collegiate careers, pushing the envelope will result in even more health problems. As it stands, getting stress out of the daily college grind might seem like a task too large to undertake. For the sake of our nation's future, we must find a way, though.
