1. Wash your hands frequently. If you are out and about and just can't find a clean bathroom, carry a hand sanitizer in your bag. To make your own hand sanitizer, get a small pump bottle and fill it with about one quarter alcohol (vodka will the job) and three quarters water. Spray your hands if you have been anywhere in public or if you're about to eat or touch your face.
2. This may sound obvious but, avoid being around sick people. If you get into a bus and you see a person sneezing and blowing their nose, don't sit next to them, move as far away as you can.
3. Get into a sinus-rinsing habit. Regular sinus-rinsing prevents colds and flues because the virus doesn't stick around long enough in the sinuses. It takes less than 20 seconds to do, and, if you get into a habit of doing it when you brush your teeth each morning and night, it will just become part of your routine. I find the best equipment for this is the NeilMed bottle or similar. You can get them from a pharmacy or their website. They are very cheap and much easier to use than a netty pot. You don't need to buy all the sachets that are sold separately. All you need is water and about an eighth of a teaspoon each of sea salt and bicarbonate soda (that's baking soda without the aluminium). If you want a stronger mixture, increase the salt and add a drop or two of eucalyptus oil. Warning! If you have a lot of polyps or blockages in your sinuses, this may start opening them up. Ultimately this is not a bad thing, and certainly beats having surgery, but you may get a runny nose as the polyps are being cleared. Do not confuse this with the common cold.
4. Keep your immune system strong with a healthy diet, physical and mental exercises and adequate rest. A strong immune system will fight off any invading virus before it takes hold.
