I suffered for years a cycle of experiencing new challenging situations and then having a debilitating headache. The headache was actually carried first in the tension of my muscles and the way I was holding my body. It was being carried in my negative fearful thoughts as I encountered many new and sometimes seemingly negative situations.
I achieved going weeks and then months without headaches by paying attention to what I was thinking about and how I was physically holding my body.
I began to notice that if I relaxed my body, my shoulders, my back, and the way I was holding my neck that tension did not find its way to my head.
Taking time out to pamper yourself in the middle of a seeming personal crisis or hard situation will help your body break down the chemicals that flood your body as excess adrenaline is released due to the stress. A hot bath or an hour of resting in a quiet pace with peaceful music can calm your emotions and help your body relax. If you are a runner then running will help you relax. If you enjoy swimming then swimming may help you to relax. My husband used to play softball and he would spend time just hitting balls at a batting range to help himself relax. Find something that helps your body and mind regroup and relax and enjoy that activity: whether its jogging, going to the gym, walking at a park, or countless other restful activities.
Nature and music are two known avenues that can bring peace to the body. Taking a long walk on the beach even in the winter can help. Try sitting and looking out over the water at a lake, or sitting under a tree and looking up at the leaves and the sky. Nature can be healing.
The second area to work on in eliminating headaches is your thoughts. Thoughts can be toxic. What are you thinking? Are you thinking about failure? Are you thinking about future success? Are your thoughts negative or positive? Negative thoughts release chemicals and hormones throughout your body that effect your system negatively. Positive thoughts actually help the levels of serotonin in your body which is the happy chemical. Smiling also releases serotonin. So get to smiling and get those thoughts under control. Write down the best possible outcome of your situations and the worst. Choose to believe for the best. Put a big X through the worst possible outcome and begin to concentrate on the best possible outcome. You will find that positive thoughts will produce healing, hope and positive outcomes.
Stop the cycle of headaches. You can live with stress headaches or you can have your very last stress headache. Its your choice and it depends on your ability to relax your body and think positively.
