Stop Hair from Frizzing: Get Smooth Hair Now

Laura Leiva
Whether it happens naturally, environmentally or as a result of over-coloring or chemical damage, frizzy hair can happen to anyone. Smooth hair allows light to reflect off of it, leaving those with coarse hair to appear dull and frizzy. Smoothing out hair with a flat iron is an easy way to get a sleek and shiny look for most hair types.

Unfortunately, using heated styling tools can cause further damage to any hair type because of the constant exposure to heat. Taking extra steps to moisturize and condition hair before using heated tools can help control frizz when flat ironing or styling hair.

Here is all you need to control frizz and get healthy, smooth hair:

• Flat Iron

• Shampoo and Conditioner for Straight Hair

• Cold water

• Hair frizz control serum

Every day, use a shampoo and conditioner that is designed to encourage or create shiny, straight hair before using a flat iron. Easy to find products in drugstores like Garnier Fructis, Sunsilk, and Pantene and many others offer formulas designed to help promote straight, sleek hair by adding moisture to frizzy and damaged strands. When using any type of hair product, only use a dime sized amount to prevent buildup, which often causes hair to look worse.

Apply a frizz control hair serum to the hair before using a flat iron. Again, use a limited amount of serum and distribute evenly, concentrating on the tips of the hair where it is driest. Avoid using too many anti-frizz products at one time, because buildup can prevent the hair shaft from absorbing the serum and protecting hair from heat. Protect hair by blow drying completely before flat ironing, since wet hair can be fragile and easily damaged. Once the hair is dry, begin to use a flat iron in small sections of the hair and work from the bottom up, concentrating on the crown of the head last.

One additional way to prevent frizzy hair is by getting a trim every 6 to 8 weeks. This can also stop split ends from traveling up the hair shaft causing hair to frizz. Refrain from over washing the hair as well, because it can strip natural oils from the hair, leading to be dry and damaged. Rinse hair with cool water to seal in moisture and close the hair cuticle. Using the coolest water tolerable to rinse out shampoo and conditioner allows for the hair cuticle to remain smooth, reducing the appearance of frizzy hair.
