Stop Internet Bullying: Why You Should Play Nice and Be Kind to People

BC Doan
We all must have our fair share of bad comments attacking us from every sides of our writing business. Often, the attack is from readers who disagree with the things we wrote, or could just be they dislike the name of the author.

It is all right, since as writers, we know we can't please everyone on the planet. Everyone is different! Everyone is unique! There are good people, as well as bad people. Opinions vary even for the same subject.

However, when a writer leaves a negative comment on another writer's article out of sheer racism, it is hard to swallow. I recently receive one of those, and upon checking out this commenter's profile, my thought was "nice looking face, but evil soul," and actually feel bad for the people in "their" life.

It is a shame that good morals and principles have not been implanted in this commenter. For all the time that I am with Associated Content, I hold the writers here on a higher standard, and still am, despite the bad seed!

So how do we play nice, and be kind to others?

Leave a nice comment if you choose to. If the article is not to your liking, you have two options: close it or suggest for improvement!

Keep in mind what you've learned: "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all!"

Think about your reputation as a writer

When readers come across the bad comment you've left, what do they think of you as a writer? Your reputation as a writer goes down with that shallow and childish act. You might end up losing viewers.

Such comment as this: "Why does this entire article sound like the directions I'd read on the back of a dollar store toy that was made in China?" can really shows the intelligent level of the commenter!

That one writer that you've put down also has many readers and friends, try not to burn your bridges!

Nasty comment is a form of bully

Since you sit behind the screen, and no one knows who you are, you feel freely bashing another person using words. That is a form of bullying. Does it make you feel better? Is your confident getting a boost after writing a terrible comment? Are you proud of yourself? Is your article pops out and getting more views?

I think not! Stop the bully cycle and get back to do what you love most: writing!

Ask yourself if you would like to be attacked

Writing is solitary and the internet connects us. It opens up a wide world at our fingertips where we should be using it to support, encourage, and share the same interest with each other.

If I didn't bother you, why then do you see the need to put me down? If it makes you feel more powerful to leave unpleasant comment on my work, do so! However, you also must remember, bad karma returns in tenth fold!

Let's keep Associated Content a decent site for others. Play nice, and be kind to people! Always keep in mind that you can close the website if you don't like it with just a click of your fingertip.

I'll never understand wanting to hurt someone just for the sake of it...or those who feel as if they actually have the power to do so from 1,000 miles away. Sticks and stones can break my bones, but a troll will never hurt me! lol Nice work :-)

Hi BC, I will take another tack. It may just be that the person who did this, has such a small mind, that your success, makes them jealous.
So just keep writing, you have a gift and you are always giving. Keep it up. Take care.

Agree 100%. I published a poem "Feedback" on this site that depicts that very thought. Roberta B.

I don't understand why people won't just click on and pass by. Why take the time to leave a stupid comment. This is such bad practise, I'm glad you wrote about this Icy. More power to you!
