Stop, Look and Listen! The Importance of Taking a Break

Heide Lynne Canlas
Wait a minute. Stop a while. Take a breather. Straighten up. Look at yourself in the mirror. You look so tense. You probably need a rest. And you should.

We live in a very time-conscious, cost-saving world. Everything needs to be done within a very tightly-kept schedule. Time spent doing nothing is time wasted. It is time worth nothing.

Wrong.

In this one big bustling metropolis we have for a world, having time for rest, no matter how brief it is, is becoming all the more important; especially for those of us who wish to live long enough to see our efforts come into fruition. We need all the break we can get. Not only to reach those long-term goals we constantly speak of, but to overcome all these small and temporary obstacles along the way, as well.

It is no secret that unlike a machine, a person is capable of performing countless more tasks seemingly impossible for said contraptions to accomplish. Those which require intellect, emotions, techniques are but some of them. However, very much like machines, a person also has his or her limits which, unless addressed properly, can lead to that person's inability to accomplish his or her tasks well --- if not failing at it completely.

This is where rest time comes in. It replenishes people when they are most weak. It keeps them away from sickness when they are most vulnerable. Put simply, it allows them to continue doing whatever it is they are doing, not only for tomorrow's sake but for many more days to come.

We are not talking about months' worth of rest here. It could merely be a day, an hour, maybe even a minute. Just enough to clear one's mind. Loosen a muscle here and there. Refocus on the job at hand. Zero in on the goal given.

That's not too much, isn't it? No, not really.

So the next time you feel like it. Go ahead. Reach for that cup of coffee. Grab a bite. Get some fresh air. Perhaps unknown to you, but you will be rewarded for it. And you should.
