Stop Losing a Sock in the Washing Machine

Stop Your Washing Machine from Eating One Sock Per Wash

Sondra C
Has anyone ever figured out how to stop losing a sock in a washing machine on laundry day?
Put an equal amount of socks into the washing machine and still come out with one sock less. There are theories about this missing sock puzzle, but no one has yet to solve the problem. No matter how carefully the socks are counted going ''into'' the washing machine, the count never comes "out" even, after the wash is done.

Things You'll Need

*Clothes pins
*Small laundry bag
*Large diaper pin
*Laundry bag

Method #1:
Pin each pair of socks together at the toe with a safety pin before adding the socks into the washing machine. Buying new matching socks can be expensive. Save money by not losing a sock in the washing machine to begin with.

Method #2:
Use an adding machine to count the socks! Just in case you have a counting problem. This will help you to stop losing socks in washing machines.

Method #3:
Put the socks into a laundry bag each night when you take them off. Do not touch the socks again. Keep filling the bag with more socks until laundry day. Make sure you tie the laundry bag closed securely to keep the 'dirty sock odor' out of the room.

Method #4:
Take the bag, with the socks intact, and pull the little cord on the top to seal the sock bag securely. Toss the bag into the wash, along with the other clothes, and you will stop losing socks in the washing machine. This is a way to save money by not having to buy a new pair of socks each week..

5.
At the End: Remove the bag when the wash is done and toss the bag, with the socks inside, into the clothes dryer. Problem solved! You should have all of your socks intact without having lost any.

Handy Tips

a.
Use a clothes pin to secure each pair of socks before tossing them into laundry bag.

b. Save the bags that loose cherries come in at the supermarket. These have holes and a perfect to hold the socks before washing them.

c.
If after all of your sock planing, you still have a sock missing, then give up! Just keep buying more socks.

d.
Buy socks all in one color. This way you will never even know if you lost a sock.

Make sure the dog is no where near the socks when you take them off. Dogs love to play with socks.

To beat the game of the lost sock buy all of the socks in the same color and style.Have a yard sale with all of the lost socks. Others might need a matching sock as well.

That's funny! I have bought all white socks, just alike, for my 2 boys at hubby years ago when the boys were still home! Got tired of losing socks!

Would you believe wearing mismatched socks is a trend?

I don't lose socks. I just don't know how to pair the darn things up once they've been laundered.

I figured out I lost most of mine before the washer, lol, great tips though:)

The one color only sock thing works well, unless you accidentally wear one inside out. Then you will still be laughed at anyway. BTW, the washer-dryer manufacturers and the sock knitting association are in cahoots: One of the most long lived, sinister conspiracies known to man.

When I was in boot camp, I was assigned to clean behind the dryers. In that hose attached to the backs of the dryers, I found a LOT of socks and underwear. I also found $money$. I was originally supposed to clean them out myself, but once I found some dollar bills... EVERYONE wanted to help. Anyway, at least now I know where those missing socks (and underwear) go!
