What motivates people from Austin to Houston to travel for an hour to frequent the tiny town of Round Top, Texas. After all, this is a tiny town with a population of 77 that one could drive by in a manner of minutes.

The answer is Round Top Café. Even though the Royer family had no prior culinary training or kitchen experience, in 1987, Bud "the Pieman" Royers, his wife Dr. Karen, and their four children moved to Round Top to assume ownership of the take over the tiny 40-seat Round Top Café.

Upon initial glance, one could easily walk by this eatery thinking it's just another silver trailer parked in the middle of nowhere. At the entrance, pass by Bud's collection of cigars before meeting the rotund man himself. Everyone is treated the same by Bud whether one is a multimillionaire rancher or a ranch hand.

Some of the highlights on their eclectic OMG! menu includes the great steak, a10oz Center-Cut filet, that can be cut with a fork; Grilled rack of lamb, a 14oz. rack of lamb, grilled medium rare and served with lemon, basil, garlic, olive oil dipping sauce, Tara's grilled Gulf snapper, Todd's Pork Tenderloin topped with our peach & pepper glaze, Shrimp stuffed grilled quail, and a whole boneless quail stuffed with grilled shrimp & cilantro, wrapped with bacon & grilled.

Area living from Houston to Austin to San Antonio can arrange for Royer's to cater their latest fete for a truly once in a time gathering that will be remembered long after the last piece of pie is gone.

Reservations are not accepted as this is strictly a first come, first serve basis. The intimate size means everyone is packed in sharing conversations and making new friends. Think of Royers as one big happy family brought together by pie. Be sure to save space for one of their many selections of pie including pecan, chocolate chip, buttermilk and apple. Real aficionados can purchase t-shirts, tees, caps, and aprons with pie related sayings like "Peace is Pie" and "I Did Not Have Pie With That Woman."

Royers is located at 105 Main Street, R ound Top, Texas and is opened Thursday to Saturday from 11am to 9pm and Sunday from 11am to 3pm. For those who cannot sample Royers in person, they ship thousands of their pies and other Royers merchandise online.
