One of the best reasons to shop Meijers over Wal-Mart is the cleanliness of the stores. As a Wal-Mart shopper, you are likely to find disorganized merchandise, unclean restrooms, and a shabby store in general. By no means is this always the case, but on a daily basis, Meijers is more organized, cleaner, and friendlier. In Meijers, you aren't likely to find merchandise in strange locations, unlike Wal-Mart. For instance, a bathroom scale at Wal-Mart in the Woodlands, Texas can be found near the paint. However, at Meijers in Essexville, Michigan can be found near small electronics and bathroom décor.
In addition, the quality of merchandise, especially food, offered at Meijers is higher than at Wal-Mart. At Meijers, you are less likely to find squished bread, squashed boxes, and fruit and vegetables that should have been rotated earlier in the day. With regards to general merchandise, Meijers offers more name brands than Wal-Mart, and once again, their merchandise tends to be higher quality. Quite frankly, items that are purchased at Meijers tend to last longer than those purchased at Wal-Mart, whether it is food, clothing, or home items.
One might expect that prices are much higher at Meijers than Wal-Mart, but while it is true that the prices are slightly higher at Meijers than Wal-Mart, that difference is more than made up for by the higher quality of the merchandise, the cleaner facilities, and better customer service. On some items, Meijers is even lower than Wal-Mart. Meijers is well aware that Wal-Mart is out to undercut them on just about everything, and as a result, Meijers has a standing campaign to help keep their prices down.
While Meijers and Wal-Mart are comparable on selection and services, one of the main differences between the two companies is their websites. Shoppers all over the world are able to purchase items from walmart.com, not so for Meijers customers. At this time, you can't purchase on-line from Meijers. However, the Meijers website is still very useful. It provides an overview of their merchandise and services, valuable coupons, information on in-store events, and a brief history of the company.
Unfortunately, those outside the Midwest aren't able to take advantage of Meijers stores at this time. It actually appears to be a part of Meijers' strategy, as they don't wish to become as ubiquitous as Wal-Mart. With a strong regional chain of superstores, Meijers can better control the quality of their merchandise, service, and the upkeep of their stores. This is especially important in a world dominated by Wal-Mart.

Post a CommentI know I'm way late on this story, but Meijer does not purposely leave sale prices out of the computer system. I am shocked that anyone would believe that. As for an "employee" saying that, it was probably someone unhappy with their job just spouting nonsense and pretending to know about something they really don't.

I shop Meijers in Greenwood, Indiana. Their prices are higher than WalMart but they usually have items that WalMart is continually deleting from their inventory. However, this store has the smelliest, most gross restrooms in the area. Yes, worst than WalMart. My husband said he just "holds it" rather than getting sick having to smell the urine smell in the men's room. The sale items ARE often not in their computer, conveniently for them. Everyone in the area knows Meijer does this on purpose and scans their receipt when they buy sale items. It is very aggravating to know a company does this "on the sly" and hasn't "fixed" their system in all the years they have been in business. I will continue to shop the sales but I shop WalMart for most of my weekly grocery needs. You just have to watch your receipt. Mejeirs certainly isn't.
If you tell us something was marked on sale and they forget to put it in the computer, we call back to the department and give you the sale price. We almost always give you the lower prices when they're marked wrong
I was at the Mt. Pleasant store last Saturday and I had to use the restroom (I'm old and the only restroom is in the front of the store) I was stopped by the greeter and was told I couldn't take my cart beyond his point and go to use the restroom. My issue is this, I have been shopping at Meijers for a while and have never been accused of trying to do anything unethical in my life until now. He was not very friendly and used an accusatory tone in his voice until my husband came to my defense. I wouldn't have minded leaving the cart but his attitude was uncalled for. It's getting to be one thing or another at your stores. Either you can't get the respect of the people at the store when need assistance or they are offensive except for their friends that keep the entrance boggled down. There are a few people who work for you that consider the needs of the customer. I realize that customer service is a thing of the past but when I have to pay the prices that you are asking and I get

Yes right meijers prices are higher, plus when they run a sale on something half the time you dont get the sale price because they dont put it in the computer. It not a mistake I was told that by an employe. Those who catch it is given the adjustment if not to bad. Thats why there so complying to give you the adjustment because they no there cheating the public.
