Store Review: Younkers

Catering to Young and Old

Lindsey Russell
If you are tired of shopping the same old department stores, Younkers has something to offer everyone. With deep discounts for senior citizens and a large selection of juniors and misses clothing, you can't go wrong when shopping at Yonkers.

A full-fledged Midwest department store chain that can often be found anchoring medium-sized shopping malls, Younkers isn't nearly as big and imposing as one of its larger competitors - Kohls. While Younkers offers brands similar to Kohls, is within a similar price range, Younkers is unique in its arrangement of stores and style. In being a bit smaller than Kohls, it is easier to locate exactly what you are looking for while you are shopping.

While Younkers isn't as upscale at Neiman Marcus or Marshall Fields, it has more unique offerings than one of its largest competitors, J.C. Penney. While stores such as Kohls do not have in store perfume and makeup counters, Younkers does. As Younkers typically helps to anchor small, medium sized malls in small to medium sized cities, it often can serve as one of the few full-service makeup and perfume counters in the area.

In such areas, Younkers is generally known for their customer service and their customer promotions. For example, they offer special senior discounts several times a month in addition to their usual senior discount. When paired with clearance items, which aren't always excluded, this can add up to simply unbeatable prices. In addition, Younkers offers special services for their elderly guests. For example, seniors can have one item gift wrapped for free. Even if you aren't a senior, or are far from it, there are many great discounts to be had.

In addition to good discounts, great merchandise, and a friendly layout, Younkers stores are known for excellent customer service. It is rare to wait longer than 10 to 15 minutes to check out, even in a longer line. As with most department stores, with the exception of Kohls, Younkers has checkout counters in most department stores. The difference is that most actually have someone there to help you in a fast, friendly, and efficient manner. In addition, their customer service center, where you can pay your Younkers charge, place items on hold, get an item gift wrapped, etc., the staff is just as friendly, fast, and courteous. Normally, the worst customer service is experienced at the customer service counter.

If you don't have a Younkers Store near you, you can shop Younkers.com. In addition to having a wide array of merchandise available for sale on the website, you can purchase gift cards or items on a registry as well. It appears that they offer items in a larger variety of sizes than at the Younkers stores. Until recently, you couldn't purchase merchandise on the Younkers website.

Whether you are searching for baby items, men's or women's clothing, shoes, home décor, or more, rest assured that you would be able to find what you need at Younkers. It isn't nearly as big and impersonal as most department stores, and adds some much needed life to small and medium sized malls in the Midwest. It is a wonderful to Midwest behemoths J.C. Penney and Kohls.

Recently, I selected a wedding gift which required extra work and time on the part of the sales consultant. My sales consultant, Sharon, in the Sheboygan Younkers store china department, went above and beyond the usual in accommodating me. Let me be clear. Sharon has always done this for everyone. She knows her merchandise and is committed to serve her customers efficiently and with kindness. She is a model sales person and I have respected her for many years. Thank you for all you can do to honor her. She is a credit to the Younkers Department stores.

Younkers sounds like a really good store to shop at! Too bad we don't have at least one around here. Maybe some day. :-)
