Storm Food

Food and clean drinking water are hard to come by after a severe storm, such as an ice storm or hurricane. Unfortunately after a storm occurs, food and water aid takes some time to distribute to the needed, especially when needed people live in out of the way areas. When a person lives in an area that is prone to having severe storms he or she should make it a habit to keep non perishable food and bottle water in storage at home. Following are some food and water accumulation preparation tips.

Water

Instead of buying bottled water, which can be expensive a person can save money buy making his or her own bottled water. Throughout the year, instead of throwing away plastic milk, juice, and soda bottles and containers, collect them. Clean them out thoroughly with boiling hot water. When it is announced that a severe storm is on the way, take the time to fill each plastic bottle and container. Be sure to have enough plastic bottles and containers to fill with enough water to use for at least two weeks worth of drinking and cooking.

The one gallon milk and orange juice cartoons are the best containers to accumulate. They hold more liquid that the soda bottles.

Also if you purchase the spring water for water coolers, hold on to your water cooler jugs. Their large size makes them excellent for storing water.

Food

The grocery stores can be very hectic when the public gets news of an approaching storm. Non perishable foods are always the first to disappear off the shelves. When a severe storm warning comes during the time of month when ones money is running low, stocking up on enough food for a storm would be hard. So if the area in which a person lives is prone to having severe storms, and if his or her monetary resources are limited, it would be a good idea to stock up on nonperishable food though the year. Remember to set the food aside for your storm stash only. Every month buy at least ten dollars worth of food to stack away.

Of course any kind of non perishable food would not do. Select the type of non perishable foods that are wholesome, and select them based on your source of cooking, for instance gas or electric.

Gas

If your cooking is done by gas, after a severe storm the gas is usually the only utility that works. So for gas cooking stock up on the following non perishable foods.

Canned Food- beans, vegetables, soup, fruit, tuna, sausages

Dry Food- corn bread mix, cake and cookie mix, rice, dried beans, pasta, oat meal, dry milk, oil,

Long Life Vegetables- onions, potatoes, garlic

Electricity

If everything runs by electricity in your home and the power goes out as a result of a storm, stock up on the following non perishable food that do not require cooking:

Canned Food- beans, vegetables, fruit, tuna, sardines, oysters

Dry Food- dry fruits( prunes and raisins), trial mixes and granola, bread crackers dry milk, fruit juice, peanut butter

It is important to be ready for a storm. A person should make an effort to accumulate water and food to consume after a severe storm. By having an abundance of provisions one will not be dependant on food and water aid, which can be limited and take a long time to come.
