St.Petersburg-Clearwater Airport Flights

StPetersburg Clearwater airport is in Pinellas County, Florida. On the west side of Tampa Bay. The much larger Tampa International Airport is on the east side. Driving from one to the other takes only about 15 minutes on Interstate 275. The airport has a long history of air service interruptions. Starting in the early seventies, newly formed Air Florida began flying an ex Pan Am Boeing 707 offering cheap tickets on flights to Miami and Orlando. The 707 was soon replaced by turboprop Lockheed Electras. A few years later Air Florida standardized on Boeing 737s and continued expanding for a while. The airport lost all flights After Air Florida was liquidated in 1984.

In the late nineties Southeast airlines began flying, using DC9 jets to Gulfport, Mississipi. It then expanded to Allentown,PA and Newburgh,NY. using larger MD80 jets before shutting down in 2004. Pan Am came and went twice. Using 727 jets, it offered flights to Sanford, Florida continuing to Baltimore and Bangor, Maine during 2000 to 2005. Indianapolis based ATA became the busiest at the airport about 2005, with cheap tickets to Indy and Chicago, before shutting down abruptly in 06.

Tiny LeHighValley Air resumed the Allentown, PA link in 2006, lasting a few flights, and being replaced by Hooters Air for a few months before they also departed. Canadian carrier JetsGo was flying in for about a year about 2004 before shutting down. It had replaced Canada3000, which also went out of business. In 2007 discount airline Allegiant Air began offering cheap tickets to a few cities, and has been expanding ever since. As of 2010 USA2000 maintains a flight to Chicago O'Hare plus Sun Country has one flight to it's Minneapolis base. Canadian airline Sunwing has flights to Toronto. The St.Pete-Clearwater airport is also a busy US Coast Guard base, UPS cargo hub, and executive aircraft services center, plus a US Army helicopter squadron is based there so it's in no danger of closing.

In December 2010 Frontier Airlines began flights to Milwaukee, and will be adding service to Omaha soon
On January 2011 Vision Airlines announced plans to start service to Fort Walton Beach, Florida and Gulfport, Mississippi in the spring. Allegiant Air now has flights to over 20 destinations, the most recent is Moline, Illinois in the Quad cities area.
