Straight from the farm at the Royal Oak Farmers Market

After you buy fruits, vegetables and jam from the Royal Oak Farmers Market, you will never look at the grocery store the same way again. Even though I've lived in Royal Oak for a while, I'd never ventured over to the farmers market on a Saturday morning. I'd never realized just what I've been missing.

Though there were some fruits and vegetables that weren't yet available last Saturday, what there was to choose from was more than enough to earn a return visit. The strawberries I found there were great sliced up on ice cream and chopped into my cereal. The fresh asparagus was easily grilled to perfection and was a great complement to the burgers I made topped with portobello mushrooms from the market, which were the biggest I've ever seen.

I also picked up a flyer for the Corn Roast & Country Fair, which will take place on Aug. 14 and will include live music, a beer tent and lots of fresh goodies to eat. Count me in.
