Straight Talk Prepaid Cellular Service

Misty Ackerman
Let's talk Straight Talk. It's the newest no contract, prepaid cellular service. You can choose from two plans: $30 per month for 1000 minutes, 1000 text and pix messages, 350 MB internet service and free 411 calling; or $45 per month for Unlimited talk, text and pix messages, internet service, and free 411 calling. Straight Talk phones use only Verizon Wireless towers, giving it better coverage than most prepaid, no contract services. So if a Verizon Wireless phone has service, then so does Straight Talk.

You can buy Straight Talk phones and refill cards at Wal-Mart, walmart.com, and straighttalk.com. I found that there is a wider variety of cell phones on straighttalk.com. They also sell the starter kit that includes the cell phone and the $30 or $45 plan that you choose in one package.

The advantages of Straight Talk. I found to to have the right price for unlimited calls and text messages. Although other prepaid, no contract services like Cricket offer savings just as affordable, they do not work in my area. Where I live there is only Verizon Wireless towers around, but Verizon's unlimited, no contract plans were way too expensive. I am also satisfied with their customer service. I have only had to call twice for simple questions, but I wasn't put on hold for very long and their customer representatives were very kind and helpful.

The disadvantages of Straight Talk. I have found that they don't have a very large selection of ring tones and wallpapers on straighttalk.com. It's difficult to find that specific song or picture to add to your phone. Also, there isn't a wide variety of phones to choose from. Although they have nice phones to choose, they don't carry phones with the latest technology like the Apple iphone. Straight Talk also has internet service with both of their plans, but it only applies to the phones that have a web browser. The internet is also a little confusing to work. It is not as simple as going in and typing an address and then you're there, it's a little more complicated than that. You really have to read the manual that comes with your phone.

All in all, it depends on what you are looking for in a cellular phone and your cellular service. There are those that like to have the latest in technology for their phones. Those looking for a phone with Apps, you are in the wrong place. However, if you are anything like myself, you want a service that has dependable coverage and an unlimited plan that fits my tight budget. I'm thrilled that my phone comes with internet service (even though I don't really need it), makes and receives calls, and send texts. I just don't need to do all three at once, not do I need Apps. Considering all of the above, if I had to grade to grade Straight Talk's service, I'd give it an A. If I had to grade it on the variety of phones or latest technology, I'd give it a B.

Misty - I was so happy I was able to move my number over to Straight Talk! I have had the same phone number since I got my first cell phone ever, so I didn't want to lose it.

Annie, you're correct in your comments. I'm one of those that's had it with the big contract providers. Even though they have you in a contract, I find the customer service to be, very frustrating. I've spent hours on the phone with them only to walk away without resolution and frustrated. I decided it was time to save some money on my cell and felt Straight Talk had the best priced unlimited plan. They do make it easy for the customer and that is important to me.

Your services are great. The negative comments some others have made is not fair to your services that you render. All information that is given to the customer when they purchase the Straight Talk Phone is communicative on a first grade level and their are no hidden gimmicks like many other companies. Try AT&T and other companies who will add services to your phone bill that you are not aware of. When Straight Talk says no contract, this is exactly what they mean. I love their honesty, but evidentially, you love a lier.
