We shared the lunch special which cost $20. The pre-fix lunch consisted of a mixed green salad with plum ginger dressing, Roti Prata (crisp griddled Indian flatbread with curry dip), Indonesian rice, spicy basil chicken, and sorbet for dessert. We also added chicken satay but that was superfluous as the lunch special provided more than enough food for two people. We even took the leftovers home which I had for dinner that evening and for breakfast the following morning.
Straights Restaurant in Houston, Texas is family style so the wait staff brought out our food as it was ready - that way we ate fresh and quickly. The mixed salad was my mother's favorite because of the plum ginger dressing (which tasted like sesame). It had just the right blend of sweet and spicy flavors, and the salad was a generous serving. The Roti Prata (crisp griddled Indian flatbread with curry dip) was my favorite and a real treat. It was not flat as we expected but it was delicious, and even though I do not normally like curry, the curry dip was light and mild yet tasty.
The chicken satay was grilled just enough to give it that BBQ satay taste but not so much as to make it dry. The chicken was moist and tender and the peanut sauce was freshly made with chopped peanuts.
The Indonesian fried rice had a plethora of peas and carrots as well as other vegetables and was the perfect complement to the spicy basil chicken. The chicken int he spicy basil chicken dish was spicy but not overwhelming. Instead it had a taste that delighted the tongue's senses and cleared out the sinuses at the same time.
We were so impressed with the flavors and freshness of the food at Straights Restaurant in Houston, Texas. Our meal ended with mango sorbet. At first we did not taste much mango but my mom surmised that it was because we had had so much spicy food that our taste buds were off. So after waiting a while (and a potty break to chich bathrooms) we tried the bottom of the mango sorbet and voila, there was the taste of mango.
I highly recommend Straights Restaurant in Houston, Texas. And even if you are not a fan of spicy food there is something on the menu for everyone with dishes like grille rib eye, calamari, wok tossed eggplant, Pad Thai, salads, and crab cakes.
