Stranded! What Things I Would Take to a Deserted Island

5 Things You Can Take If Stranded

Jennifer Amlie
Being stranded on a deserted island for a year may sound like a frightening prospect. If you have a few basics supplied by the island like natural foods and a shelter you can build, being stranded might not be so bad. It could even be an opportunity to relax and catch up on things you enjoy but don't have time for. Bringing the right things is important to ward off boredom and loneliness. Here's a list of five things I would take if I was stranded on a deserted island.

Books- I can't live without books. They would be the first things I reach for on a deserted island. I'd bring my Harry Potter books, the complete works of Edgar Allan Poe and my H.P. Lovecraft books. I'd also want various other horror classics like Dracula and Frankenstein.

DS LITE- I love video games. A thing like my Nintendo DS would be great if I was stranded. I'd bring some extra batteries for it. Puzzle games like Tetris and Legend of Zelda would be a must. It probably won't last a whole year without an electric charger. Gaming is just one of those things I would like to enjoy as long as possible.

Notebooks and Pens- Paper and pens would be important to me. It would be nice to write and doodle while being on a deserted island. With having a whole year of being stranded, I might be able to actually learn to draw.

Water- On a day to day basis, I don't have to worry about where my next drink is coming from. Being stranded is different; would I have to wait for rain just to get a drink? If there are streams or lakes, how would I know they're safe to drink from? I might as well take water to the deserted island.

Sunscreen- Since moving to Florida, I discovered I burn really fast. Even just a few hours enjoying the sun at the beach causes sunburn. Being stranded on a deserted island for a year with no proper housing would be a nightmare on my skin. I would bring SPF 50 or higher sunscreen.

By writing this, I realized how dependent I am on electricity and technology for my entertainment. I kept thinking about my favorite movies or TV shows on DVD I would miss watching. I prefer home gaming systems to portable ones like the DS. I would miss playing video games on my360, PS3 and Wii. Being stranded on a deserted island would be difficult. As long as I have the five things in the list, I would manage. I even might be able to relax and enjoy it.

It would be tough to be deserted without electricity! We are so spoiled. Fun article!
