Strange but True Laws in Tennessee

Some Funny Laws!

Boricua
You've probably heard some of these before. There are all kinds of crazy laws out there that were passed many years ago that still exist today. Most of these are pretty outdated and make very little sense in today's world. Here are some of the strange but true laws that still exist today in the state of Tennessee. Enjoy!

More than eight women are not allowed to live in the same house. Why? If they did it would be considered a brothel! It is also illegal for women to drive cars alone. They must have a man in front of the car waving a red flag. This is to warn other motorists and pedestrians that a woman is driving. Wow!

Also, it is illegal for anyone, not just a woman, to drive while asleep. It's a good thing we have that law! Otherwise, everyone would be driving in their sleep!

Ministers are not allowed to hold a seat in the House of Representatives or the Legislature. Why? Ministers are supposed to be dedicated to God and holding one of these positions would take away from that. Also interesting, persons participating in a duel may not hold any public office. So, ministers and duelists are prohibited from serving the citizens in a public office.

No Christian parent may allow his or her children to pick up trash on the highway on Easter day. Why? Nobody should be allowed to work on a day that his or her religion classifies as a day of rest. It is also illegal to dare a child to purchase alcoholic beverages.

Animal lovers should love this one. In Tennessee, it is illegal to catch a fish by using a lasso. Apparently it would be much more humane using the traditional fish hook! It is also illegal to steal a horse. Stealing a horse faces a punishment of hanging! People in Tennessee must really love their horses!

Another strange law pertaining to animals: It is illegal to collect road kill and then eat it. It is also illegal to carry skunks into the state of Tennessee. Why? Skunks are known to be carriers of rabies. This law was put into place to keep Tennessee residents safe from rabies.

Another strange but true law: You can't sell hollow logs! Maybe that is because of another law that states "Crimes against nature are prohibited".

These are some of the strange laws out there for the state of Tennessee. Tennessee residents better watch out!

That anyone would think that these laws, some are real, are still policed is crazy. I live in Tennessee, we are normal people. It's not really Deliverance or Beverly Hillbillies down here. Come on people, every state has old stupid laws, but they must have had a use in their time, except that whale law, hmmmm.

I've been researching, because I was curious as to why the frats on campus at the U of Memphis can have big frat houses by we can only have 9 girls live in our sorority house. We don't have houses, we have townhouses with nine bedrooms in them. I've found several articles that say there is no proof that any such "brothel law" ever existed, and no documentation that would lead my to believe it is. Legally, a house is a brothel if it is an establishment created and used for the purpose of prostution. There ya go. Can't be that, must be something else.

Actually men don't have to stand in front of women driving. That was awhile back in Memphis.. I live in Tennessee and no one here runs in the middle of the street.. Unless they're just complete idiots.

Actually, it is legal to collect roadkill and eat it. They legalized it in the late 1990's.

Some of these laws are still in practice today, this is why all Tennessee Universities don't have any sorority houses on campus.
