Strange Chicago Laws

Strange Chicago Laws of the Past and Present

Susan Sonnen
As is true of cities all over the world, Chicago has its share of strange laws. While I have not researched the factuality of the laws that follow, most of them did show up on multiple sites as strange Chicago laws of the past or present. I beg you, though, do not hold me accountable if there is an exaggeration or out and out lie to be found in this list! I am, after all, only repeating hearsay. Now, on with the list of strange Chicago laws!

-In Chicago, Illinois, it is against the law to eat in an establishment that is on fire.

-Believe it or not, it is illegal to speak English in Chicago. American is what we speak here!

-In Chicago, it is illegal for men to fish in their pajamas.

-Any person without at least one dollar in their pocket or wallet might be arrested for vagrancy while walking the streets of Chicago, Illinois.

-It is against the law to fly a kite in Chicago. Oh my, I saw a happy family flagrantly defying this law just last weekend!

-It was once illegal to display a stud bull or horse in an indecent manner in the city limits of Chicago, Illinois. Hmm. I would hope that this law still had a place in the books!

-Don't even think about escorting a French poodle to an opera in Chicago.

-Now this one just makes me angry. If you are deformed to the extent of being "an unsightly or disgusting object," you may not go out in public while in Chicago.

-Be sure to contact the Chicago police before driving an automobile into the city limits.

-Unmarried women must call bachelors "master," as opposed to "mister." That strange Chicago law just makes me want to throw something!

There are many more strange Chicago laws to be found on the Internet. If one chose to research strange laws from around the world, she might never be seen again as there are so many that she could never wade through them all in one lifetime! Thankfully, as far as I know, it is not illegal to do a Google search for strange Chicago laws.
