Strange Creatures in Utah

Steven Symes
For decades there have been dozens of sightings of the famous creature Bigfoot within the borders of Utah. The state seems to be strangely absent of any other types of cryptids, or animals that scientifically do not exist. Is Bigfoot the only cryptid to be rumored as a resident of the Beehive State?

Of course not.

There have been all kinds of strange creatures reportedly seen from the deserts of southern Utah to the rugged Uintas and everywhere in between. With so much wilderness and open land, it seems almost inevitable that undiscovered creatures run Utah's open spaces.

One cryptozoologist in particular thinks the chances of finding strange animals in the Utah wilderness is fairly high. John Warms passed through Utah on his way to checking out some areas in Arizona, as was reported by the Deseret News back in December when Warms made his visit. If you missed the news of Warms' investigations into Utah's undiscovered creatures, perhaps it was because it all occurred during Christmas time.

What was Warms looking for in Utah? Well, for one he was in search of giant beavers, which are a type of specialty for Warms as a cryptozoologist. Apparently creatures that were like gigantic beavers did roam the earth about 10,000 years ago. These creatures weighed over 400 pounds and were 9 feet long. Warms, a resident of Canada, has been chasing down eyewitness accounts of beavers the size of bears for quite some time. Warms now thinks he has found some evidence of the giant beavers living at Lake Powell, including tunnels 3 feet in diameter along the shore of the lake.

One spot Warms feels quite certain there is the very real chance of making cryptozoological history is Bear Lake. Tales of a strange monster living in the lake have been around for quite some time. Warms thinks there is a very real chance the tales have some truth to them. In fact, Warms believes the lake may be the home to a monster similar to Nessie or the Loch Ness Monster. Why does Warms feel this way? Mostly because Bear Lake is deep, which somehow means it could harbor such a creature.

Warms also checked into the standard snakes of unusual size claims which have popped up here and there in Utah since before white settlers arrived, as well as other unusual animal sightings.

When asked what his wife thought of his hobby, Warms responded "she wishes I were an ordinary person."
