Strange Foods That Come in a Can

Canned Cheeseburger Anyone?

Jennifer Wagner

If convenience is your top priority, and taste isn't of any importance, you may find a quick dinner idea within these strange canned foods. As it turns out, if you can imagine it, someone else has too - And they've cooked it and put it in a can. Ewwww! If you've ever cringed at the sight of canned foods like Spam or Vienna Sausages, you're in for a real treat with these bizarre concoctions.

As a kid growing up with a drill instructor for a father, I had to eat my share of MREs (meals ready to eat). Hey, we were broke and the packaged meals were cheap! I've tasted spaghetti and meatballs that came from a pouch, squeezed stinky cheese spread onto stale vacuum-sealed crackers, and actually enjoyed freeze dried fruit slices. But, these gross canned foods have all of that stuff beat!

Canned bread

I'll ease you into this by starting out our list of strange canned foods with canned bread. Just open the lid and eat the bread right out of the can. Although it's described as being moist, I bet it comes out of there like a brick! This gross canned food is made by a company called B & M, which is way to close to the 'BM' term my grandma used to use.

Canned Cheeseburger

Don't have time to hop in the car and sit in the drive-thru? No problem! Just plop out a helping of a juicy canned cheeseburger. It's pre-cooked and ready to eat, although you may want to heat it first. This delectable meal is the brainchild of Swiss-based company Katadyn. There's something dangerous in the idea of eating a hamburger patty and bun that have been sealed in a can and transported across the country.

Canned hot dogs

As if hot dogs didn't get a bad enough wrap already, a company by the name of Ye Olde Oak offers them pre-cooked and canned, for your convenience. Mini hot dogs, chili hot dogs, Jumbo dogs, and good old-fashioned American hot dogs, are available from their website.

Canned whole chicken

Have you ever had a hankerin' for a whole chicken, but just didn't feel like cooking one? That's no longer a problem. Just head out to the store and buy a whole chicken that's been pre-cooked and stored in a can. How long has it been in there? Who knows! This gelatinous culinary creation is made by Sweet Sue, who also offers cans of shredded chicken, chicken and dumplings, chicken barbeque, and other pre-cooked meat products. No doubt, though….the whole chicken is really something special.

Canned bacon

With a shelf life of ten years (really!), Tactical Canned Bacon (affectionately known as Tac-Bac to survivalists) will provide you with 50 slices of pre-cooked smoky bacon. Believe it or not, I think my teenage son would actually eat this. That boy loves him some bacon!

Canned Atlantic Herring (with teeth!)

The idea of eating canned fish is repulsive in itself, but when the fish comes canned with sharp pointed teeth…. It takes things to a whole new level of grossness. Check out these pictures posted on the English Russia website. You'll have to see it for yourself to believe it.

Canned Squid

Everyone knows that vampire fish go great with squid, so be sure to pick up a can of Ligo canned squid. It comes packaged in natural ink (it even says on the label). This little beauty comes out whole, not chopped, diced, or in bite-size pieces.
