Strange Laws in New Jersey

It is Illegal to Wear a Bullet Proof Vest While Committing a Murder

In New Jersey it is illegal to commit a murder while wearing a bullet proof vest, and that is not the only strange law in the state. There are other laws in the state that some deem to be strange.

Another strange law in New Jersey is that one cannot legally pump his own gas at a gas station. All stations must by law be full service.

Whether you consider this New Jersey law strange or not, a man may not legally knit during fishing season.

Maybe this law really isn't that strange: a phone line must be yielded to another, if the other person wants to call because of an emergency.

Wear a smile wherever you go, because it is illegal in the state to frown at a police officer.

It is illegal to slurp your soup.

If you are driving in an automobile, you may not legally pass a horse driven carriage.

You may not legally detain or delay any homing pigeon.

If you want to sell spray paint and want to do so legally, you must post a sign warning juveniles about the legal penalty for creating graffiti.

It is illegal to sell handcuffs to minors.

If you are ever convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol, you may never again buy a personalized license plate.

If you are driving in a car, you must honk your horn if you are passing another car, skater, skateboarder, or bicyclist.

May is "Kindness Awareness Month" in New Jersey.

Citizens of the state are urged to observe the third Thursday of October because it is "New Jersey Credit Union Day." They are encouraged to celebrate the day with "appropriate activities and programs."

Some towns and townships in New Jersey have their own strange laws.

Bernards Township has been designated a "Frown-Free Town Zone."

In Blairstown it is illegal to throw ashes on the sidewalk. It is also illegal to plant street-side streets, if they "obscure the air." Shooting ranges are illegal in the state.

It is illegal to wear shorts or dance on the main avenue.

In Cranford, you may not park your own boat on your lawn.

How can this law be enforced? In Cresskill cats must wear three bells. This is to warn birds they are in the area.

In Elizabeth a woman walking down Broad Street must wear a petticoat.

In Haddon it is illegal to annoy a member of the opposite sex.

In Manville, you will be breaking the law if you offer cigarettes or alcohol to animals at a local zoo.

In Mount Laurel, you will be breaking the law if you get drunk and annoy others.

In Newark, make certain you do not sell ice cream after 6 p.m., unless your potential customer has a note from his doctor.

You may not slurp your soup in Ocean City. You also may not play pinball machines on Sunday. It is also illegal in the city to sell hamburger.

In Trenton, you may not throw a pickle on the street, nor consume them on Sundays.

Enjoyed reading the strange laws of NJ. As a former New Jerseyan, I was unaware of these laws. Glad I was never caught:-)
