You can now play Street Fighter II for free. To celebrate the PC release of Street Fighter IV, Capcom's Street Fighter II - Champion Edition is now free to play on your browser. In 1987, Capcom released a little known arcade title called Street Fighter. While it was successful, it wasn't really popular enough to warrant a sequel. Fortunately, that didn't stop the publisher and developer of Street Fighter, Capcom, from making a sequel.

Thus, Street Fighter II was released in 1991. Unlike most fighting games at the time, the sequel features an unprecedented depth and a diverse cast of fighters. As a result, it became a cultural phenomenon overnight in the arcades and later on other systems. It also single-handily began the competitive gaming scene.

Street Fighter II saw multiple revisions throughout the years. The first of which is Street Fighter II - Champion Edition. It was a significant upgrade from Street Fighter II - The World Warrior as this edition includes previously unplayable boss characters. Furthermore, you can now fight the same characters simultaneously. As a result, the roster has been expanded with Street Fighter II - Champion Edition. Finally, the gameplay has also been tweaked for more balance between characters.

After Street Fighter II - Champion Edition, there were five more upgrades from the original arcade version of Street Fighter II. Perhaps the most popular of which is Super Street Fighter II Turbo.

The Street Fighter series became dormant for years after Street Fighter II. Despite being the sequel to the most popular fighting game ever, Street Fighter III underperformed due to the losing popularity of 2D fighting games. 3D fighting titles like Tekken and Soul Calibur ruled the fighting game genre.

Fortunately, Capcom wasn't fazed by the waning interests in 2D fighting games. They decided to take another stab at the Street Fighter series. Instead of improving on Street Fighter III, Capcom decided to go further back to Street Fighter II. By mixing in simple-to-learn moves in addition to the limitless amount of depth, Street Fighter IV became an instant hit. Naturally, interest was on the rise again for Street Fighter II as a result.

Capcom took advantage of this by releasing Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix on the Playstation Network and Xbox Live Arcade before the release of the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Street Fighter IV. To mark the release of the PC port of Street Fighter IV, they decided to make Street Fighter II - Champion Edition into a free web browser game. You can play the free title on the following link:
