Strength when You Are Tired of Being Alone

Day 53 - a Year with God

Marilyn Quinn
Being alone has become almost synonymous with being lonely to some people. I tend to have extremes in temperament where I will sometimes long for solitude; then at other times I will cling desperately to the idea that I need my spouse beside me whenever possible.

I don't always do well being alone. It could be those past abandonment issues coming up. Maybe some of my insecurities are surfacing; my safety and well-being feels threatened somehow when I am alone. Being alone doesn't have to necessarily mean something bad; but when you couple it with a tendency toward depressive moods and past bouts of clinical depression, it takes on a sinister feel. Even if you aren't threatened, you feel threatened by the isolation.

I am finding great scripture that is allowing me to be able to look at the issue of being alone with a broader frame of mind and more openness as to the benefits of it; or at least to see that I am not really "alone".

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; they rod and thy staff they comfort me." Psalm 23:4

"When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up." Psalm 27:10

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Psalm 46:1

"But a time is coming, and has com, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me." John 16:32

We can be alone without company of another person. God is always there with us. He doesn't leave us. Even when we feel abandoned and lonely and it seems that no one in the world cares. When we are at our most desperate because it seems everyone has left us; we can take comfort that He is with us. You have to know that what your fears are telling you about being alone isn't the truth.

A quote from an unknown source; "Loneliness is not the absence of affection, but the absence of direction." Becoming strong in our relationship with God and having faith in his continuing presence will allow us to overcome the feelings of loneliness in our lives.

I think every Christian will go through periodic battles with this.
