Stretching a Buck for Christmas

Teresa (Tracey) Stanisha
Times are tough, as we all know. This Christmas it may be more important to be frugal and watch what you spend. There are ways that you can do so and still enjoy the holiday.

Using the credit cards that offer you money back for purchases or points that you can redeem for flights or hotel rooms are excellent ways to stretch a buck during the holiday season.

Purchasing gift certificates through a company that offers money back for them, like Giant Eagle, are another way to save some cash during your holiday gift giving. That way you can let the person on your list buy what they want this year.

Shopping at the Dollar Store is a great way to get stocking stuffers that will not break your budget. You can find all kinds of different items that will not cost you a lot.

Making your own holiday cards via your computer or sending e-cards can also help save you some expenses during the holiday season. Another option is to not send as many cards as you normally do.

Reduce impulse buying, though as hard as it is, is imperative. Make the list that you intend to stick with and only buy the items that you need for the holiday season. If going to the mall is just too risky for you, then consider shopping online so that you will not be swayed to purchase those items that you do not need.

Shop the sales, cut the coupons and use the rebates. Many people save lots of money by utilizing these options. Take advantage of Layaway options if they are offered as they will allow you to pay a little on the purchases at a time. K-Mart offers Layaway options this year.

Forgo buying new holiday clothing and use the ones that you wore years ago. Know one will remember that you wore it before, if they do, then just make some added additions to it. Use a belt to change the look. Add some sequins or flowers to make an old outfit appear new.

Opt out of gift exchanges is you can. They are fun for the holiday time, but if you are strapped for cash, opt out and save your money. If opting out is not a possibility, use gift certificates for gifts and purchase them at a place that offers you money back for your purchase.

Gift baskets are a great gift during the holiday, but they can be expensive. This year you might want to make your own and save a lot of money. If you have the time, put together your own special gift basket for that special person in your life. You can fill it with whatever you want.

Hit the Drive-in during the holiday to see some great movies if you have one in your area. In Pittsburgh, PA, the Dependable Drive-in is open year round and offers two first rate movies for $6. That is a huge savings when you want to get some holiday entertainment in. Bring your own food from home for snacks while you are watching the movies. It makes sense.

Opt for the dollar menu if you must eat out a lot at the fast food restaurants. This will allow you to save some money to afford some nice sit down dinners at pricier restaurants during the holiday season.

With all these tips, you should be able to have a wonderful holiday. Enjoy it to the fullest.
