In 2005, the Surgeon General announced that 50% of all Americans over age 50 are at risk for dangerous and debilitating bone fractures caused by osteoporosis and poor bone health. At this time, over 10 million Americans have been diagnosed with osteoporosis and another 34 million are at risk of developing it.
AT WHAT AGE DOES BONE LOSS BEGIN?
The loss of bone density begins at around age 35, and this speeds up after menopause. By the age of 50, a woman has a 50% chance of experiencing a low bone density-related fracture! If you've ever known of an elderly woman who's "tripped or fallen down" and as a result broken a hip, it's can be likely that the bone fractured first - then she fell down, causing even greater damage. This is especially dangerous when healing, as blot clots can dislodge and cause a stroke or heart attack. Men are at risk, too, with 50% of men over 50 having below normal bone density and 6% having osteoporosis.
I TAKE CALCIUM, ISN'T THAT ENOUGH?
No. Americans have the highest calcium intake in the world, but the highest rate of osteoporosis.
QUESTIONS ABOUT BONE DENSITY?
Have your physician order a simple bone density test.
RECENT STUDY
According to a recent study treating patients with bone loss with a mineral called Strontium, participants were able to increase bone density in ONE year and REDUCE FRACTURES by 44% in two years! With continued therapy with Strontium, you can actually re-build bone mass.
WHAT'S STRONTIUM?
Strontium is a mineral that's similar to Calcium and Magnesium and is concentrated in human teeth. Strontium can increase the absorbtion of Calcium into bones and teeth, making them thicker and stronger. It's been shown to be just as effective as prescription medications for osteoporosis, but without the side effects or toxicity.
It is highly recommended for patients with osteoporosis and osteopenia as well as all post-menopausal women. It's a good idea to take it preventatively if you are over age 35. Certain medications, like Synthroid for hypothyroidism can increase the chances for osteoporosis. Long term use of Strontium shows promise in alleviating back pain that is related to osteoporosis.
A BEAUTY ADVANTAGE
There's good incentive to prevent bone loss in the face and skull. As we age, the bone density in the face and jaw decrease, which is a considerable factor in the appearance of sagging skin along the lower jaw - the bones aren't as big as they used to be. By keeping bones dense, the face will look more full.
Cosmetic surgery continues to be on the upswing in the U.S. The face lift procedure can create an undesirable pulled effect. Instead, surgeons are now injecting fillers like Restylane and inserting synthetic cheek bone implants to create fullness in that area. Preventing bone loss naturally is a safe way to hold onto bone mass in the cheek area and keep a youthful appearance.
More Than Vanity: Teeth can also loosen with age, as the jaw bones lose bone mass. As well, teeth can lose Calcium and wear down. Prevent unwanted back pain due to bone loss, avoid the familiar "hump back" appearance that osteoporosis causes, and keep your height as you age. Strontium should be a part of your prevention and anti-aging efforts. Taking the right supplements and engaging in weight-bearing exercise prevents massive bone loss.
HOW DO I TAKE STRONTIUM?
To increase bone mass, you need to take Strontium in conjunction with Vit.D and Calcium. (Again, Strontium works by increasing the absorption of Calcium.) You should take Strontium at a SEPARATE time than Calcium and Vit. D. Take Calcium and Vit. D with meals and the Strontium between meals. I also recommend adding Magnesium, as too much Calcium can deplete Magnesium. Coral Calcium is a good source of Cal/Mag.
Other Studies:
*In one study of bone resorption offset by Calcium, it indicated that 1,500 mg of calcium, when given in divided doses of 500 mg in the morning and 1,000 mg in the evening, suppresses bone resorption markers both during the day and night in early postmenopausal women.
*Drinking two glasses of soymilk each day may protect postmenopausal women against bone loss that can lead to osteoporosis, reports the European Journal of Nutrition (2004;43:246-57).
*B Vitamins Join the Fight Against Thinning Bones - The results of two new studies suggest that taking folic acid and other B vitamins can substantially reduce the risk of bone fractures due to bone thinning, or osteoporosis. These studies, published in the New England Journal of Medicine (2004;350:2042-9 and 2004;350:2033-41), provide indirect evidence that B vitamins may be at least as important as calcium for preventing age-related fractures.
A GREAT PRODUCT - BIOSTRONG
BioStrong by Health Concerns is a great new product. It has a higher level of Strontium than many other products on the market today and is combined with Black Pepper Fruit extract. Black Pepper Fruit increases the absorption of Strontium. PLEASE NOTE: If you are experiencing IC, you should avoid this product due to its black pepper content.
Ingredients:
750 mg of Strontium carbonate (340 mg active) and BioPerine (Black Pepper Fruit extract)
Suggested Use: Two (2) tablets per day between meals. For best results DO NOT take at the same time of day with Calcium.
Health Concerns' products contain the highest level of active herbs in the industry. Be aware that some other brands' formulations include Calcium - when it's been researched that taking Calcium with Strontium LOWERS its efficacy. Health Concerns BioStrong is available through your healthcare practitioner.
