Structure & Support Groups for the Suicidal Individual

How Structure and Support Can Improve Outlook

For individuals who feel depressed and a desire to commit suicide, there can be great chaos in their lives, both physically and emotionally. If you are a loved one of an individual who persistently suffers from suicidal thoughts, suicidal tendencies and suicidal attempts, it is important to offer your assistance.

While a person who is suicidal may turn away your help and support, it must be offered anyway. When caring for a suicidal family member, your assistance in their care may include the creation of structure in their life and identifying support groups the suicidal person may access for assistance.

While you may deem a structured life to be a boring or uninteresting life, the fact is, many suicidal individuals are struck by thoughts of suicide when they feel helpless. Without structure, and a feeling of control, the suicidal person will often suffer from recurring bouts of suicidal attempts. As a family member, you can assist in reducing these suicidal tendencies by creating a structure for their life.

So, how do you create structure for the suicidal person? First, find activities within the home and outside of the home that can be done as a distraction to the suicidal thoughts. Going to school, participating in an art class, join a reading club or even work out at a gym. In a day planner, list an activity for each day of the week. By doing this, you are providing a mandatory schedule that must be followed to ensure the suicidal person is not only engaging in a distraction, but also involved in social networks with other individuals. Without this mandatory schedule, there is a feeling of low self worth that is often accompanied with suicidal thoughts.

As part of the structure, the suicidal individual should be exposed to support groups who specialize and focus upon carrying for those who suffer from recurring suicidal tendencies. Support group meetings can even be listed as a weekly mandatory activity.

In terms of care for the suicidal individual, most healthcare professionals will recommend a support group as a primary focus of care. Often, local churches and civic organizations will provide support groups for suicidal individuals and even provide that support based upon gender and age.

As with any mental health complication, it is important to find the appropriate forms of treatment early. In the case of suicide, there is a close association between prolonged and untreated depression. If you are caring for a loved one with suicidal tendencies, considering creating a structure for their lives and finding a local support group who can assist you in your daily challenges in working through the complications suicidal thoughts can bring.
