Student Financial Management Tips

Full time college students usually have a tough time financially. If you want to get some money, then you need to get a part time job because you can't have a full time one, and this leave you with very few options that don't pay really well. Besides, there are tons of expenses like housing books and tuition, so it is quite hard to manage the little money you have effectively. Here are just a few tips that you might find useful to spend your money more effectively.

The first thing you need to make is a budget because you simply can't do well financially if you don't have a budget to work with. This is because money is tight and you need a way to administer your money and setting priorities; if you don't do this, is just a matter of time until you max out your credit cards and run into debt.

Now that I mention credit cards, be careful with them. Maybe you are offered more than one credit card, and it can be tempting but don't. It is hard enough to manage one credit card, and if you have multiple cards the debt you accumulate from all of the will be huge. Stick to one credit card only and use it wisely.

Then you need to know where money goes and try to reduce those expenses. One of the places where more money is spent is in your meals. Don't go out every time you eat because this will raise your expenses quite high. A regular meal is between 5 and 10 dollars, and it adds up at the end of the month. Go to the grocery store and buy some real food. Making your own food is a great way to save money and you will eat healthier.

It is ok to go to a bar and have a god time with your friends, but when you do so, never take your credit or debit cards with you. This will prevent you from spending too much. Also remember to keep a record of your debit card balance and expenses because overdraft fees are a killer. Just a few of them can cost you hundreds of dollars and if they pile up you'll be heading to financial disaster.

If you live close to your University, then don't use your car. Many schools offer a bus service to the students nearby; use the bus, and if your university doesn't have one, the walk. The exercise will be good for you and you'll be saving money on gas.

Also remember to turn off the air conditioning whenever you are not home. The difference in your electricity bill can be huge. The first time I applied this myself, I saved about 80 dollars on the first month; this money can be used to pay other bills or to go party, so save it.
