Student Hangs Noose in UCSD Library, University Response Not Harsh Enough

UCSD is Sending Wrong Message by Not Expelling This Student on the Spot

Ryan Christopher DeVault
A University of California San Diego student hung a noose in a campus library on Thursday night. UCSD has suspended the student, but now the question becomes whether the University has actually done enough to show that they won't tolerate this behavior. In the opinion of many people, this writer included, UCSD has really dropped the ball on this issue, and needed to expel the student the moment that she admitted to being a racist. Many students on campus feel hurt and angry about the actions of this student, and it is time that the University stops supporting someone committing alleged hate crimes, and instead sends a message to the whole student body.

This seems to be more than an issue about the University not coming down harsh enough on a student, and more that the University isn't taking a real stand on the issue. A suspension here is a slap on the wrist, and UCSD should be pressing for a full expulsion of this student from the University. This was an action that had severe racial overtones, and half of the civilized world would call what she did racist. Is it because this was a woman hanging a noose that the University hasn't responded with more disdain? What if it is a white male with a shaved head that did something this crass? Would there be any question that he would be gone the moment it was discovered to be him?

It's 2010, and racial intolerance such as this should not be condoned on any college campus. This is what I would definitely consider to be a hate crime, and one that was designed to terrorize other students at the school. I don't care if this was a joke, or if this woman and her friends thought that it was funny, because it is not behavior that can be accepted at all. It's not okay for UCSD to allow students to be "a little racist", and the environment that this girl sought to create is beyond wrong. Not only should this student be expelled, but she should also be charged for any and all police action taken to investigate and deal with the alleged crime that she committed Thursday night.

The woman is black and trying to get sympathy for her cause.

She actually admitted to being a racist? What an idiot. That does make it a hate crime. Otherwise, it's still the height of stupidity, inconsiderate, unconscionable.

Regardless of color the noose carries a tone of racism and should be tolorated. Ignorance breeds stupid acts which leads to violent crimes.

    Samantha?
How do you know the woman was not "African-American"? Are you just guessing? Has this information been released by anyone? If so, who?

  • Samatha 2/27/2010

No the female was not African American. The incident is a federal crime and the University lost it's jurisdiction after she confessed. Any other students with her should also face charges.

  • BullFrog 2/27/2010

How do you know the female is black?

Yes, there have been several rumors that the student was black circulating around our campus- which would explain the University's lack of discipline in an attempt to cover their own asses. This whole situation is ugly and demeaning to people of all races and backgrounds. The actions of a few (not to mention, a few acting in an off campus/non campus related activity... which it is being released now was hosted and prompted by a black rapper/comedian as a cd/dvd release party) DO NOT represent the actions and sentiments of the many. This whole thing has been twisted to fuel an alternative agenda and unfortunately the media and the masses are eating all of it up. We are essentially building up walls instead of tearing them down.

That's not progress. It's only when race does NOT even factor into the equation that we will have truly over come racism.

It's wrong to be a racist from an ethical and in my case, religous perspective. But it's not illegal to be a racist and should not be ground for expulsion, you can't just apply the Bill of Rights to people you like or agree with on issues.

Ever hear of due process? Letting cooler heads prevail? This only happened 2 days ago, let the investigation run its course before they determine what punishment is appropriate.
