Deferring student loan payments is a suspension or post pone of monthly payments for one reason or another. If the borrower anticipates a suspension of monthly payments thru a deferment then they must meet the certain qualification for that deferment. If two parties are an a loan that is considered a joint loan. For a deferment of payments on a joint loan, both parties must qualify for a deferment. However they both don't need to qualify for the same deferment.
Following will be the different types of deferments as well as qualifications needed to use each deferment option. If you choose to contact your student loan servicer for the deferment form ask them to explain the details on how to fill out the form. On most but not all deferment, particular individuals must sign and certify the forms. In addition to so, there may also be additional documentation that must be attached to the form for an approval. When the form is received fill it out correctly and make sure it is completed , additional documentation enclosed if needed and shave it dated and signed. If you have forgotten how to complete the form please contact your student loan servicer again with the form in hand. When you forward it back to the company, be sure to follow up for an approval. Once it is approved keep in mind of the repayment date for when the deferment ends.
Economic hardship deferment is of course for those borrowers in which are going thru an economic hardship meaning a financial hardship, however your monthly gross income cant exceed federal minimum wage or poverty level for your family size per month. If your total student monthly loan payment has to exceed over 20% of your gross monthly income you would still qualify for this deferment. Another option that you have is if you receive public assistance or serve in the Peace Corps.
An Unemployment deferment is offered to those who are unemployed and must be seeking seeking full time employment thru a registered employment agency. If you are not then you must at least be receiving the unemployment benefits.
There are two types of in school deferments in which are the in school deferment and the half time in school deferment.
The in school deferment is the most common deferment used. The qualifications for this deferment is for those borrowers in which are in school full time. The school must be a certified and accredited school to use this deferment. A school official must indicate on this form that you are enrolled in the school as a full time student.
There is also a half time in school deferment.This is for borrowers in which are enrolled with a certified and accredited school. A school official has to indicate on this form that you are registered in that school half time. Less than half time also known as a part time status prevents you from using this deferment .
There are four types of education related deferment; the graduate fellowship deferment, internship and residency deferment, rehabilitation training deferment and the teacher shortage area deferment.
Graduate fellowship deferment is for borrowers who are in full time course of studies on a graduate fellowship program. This must be a full time program and an official must sign the form.
There is an internship and residency deferment in which borrowers can use to postpone payments if they are in an internship/residency program. Dental interns are also able to use this deferment. The program must be a supervised program in which you received a certificate or degree. This form will also have to be signed by an official of the program.
The rehabilitation training deferment is for borrowers who are in a full time rehabilitation training program. This must be an approved program and signed by an official.
Teachers teaching in a designated teacher shortage area qualify for a teacher shortage area deferment. This deferment will need to be signed and certified by the schools chief.
There are six public service deferments. These consist of the armed forces deferment, public health service deferment, peace corps deferment, the action programs deferment, tax exempt organization deferment and the national oceanic sand atmosphere administration deferment. For these deferments your loans must have been
disbursed by 07/01/93 in order to use the use the next deferments. For borrowers of plus loans, the first loan must have been disbursed before 08/15/83.
Action programs deferment is for those serving full time in the action programs for at least one year. An official has to certify this form.
Borrowers serving in the in an active duty military status qualify for an armed forces deferment. Your commanding officer must sign this form.
A national oceanic and atmosphere administration deferment is for those serving in the NOAA on an active duty status.
There is a peace corps deferment for those borrowers serving in the peace corps for at least one year.
Pubic health service deferment assist borrowers who are full time officers in the commissioned corps of the public health service.
Full time paid volunteers in a tax exempt organizations qualify for the tax exempt organization deferment.
The temporary total disability deferment is for borrowers in which have a disability condition. This condition must prevent them from working as well as going to school. The disability cant be pre existing from when you applied for the loans. This deferment can even by those borrowers in which care for a disabled person. The doctor of the person disabled must complete and sign a portion of this form as well.
There is a parental leave deferment for borrowers who are pregnant, caring for a new born are recently adopted child.
For those mothers who recently entered into the work force are offered a working mother deferment.
Two types of military deferments. There is the regular military deferment and the post active duty student deferment.
The military deferment is for the borrowers serving active duty status. This includes national guard duty during a war, military operation or national emergency.
Post active duty student deferment is for borrowers who were called to active duty. However the borrower must have been enrolled in an eligible school within six months prior to when was called to active duty.
The following deferments are for plus loans:
Dependent student enrolled full time deferment is much like the in school deferment. However this is a different due to the fact that this is for a plus loan. The borrower would apply for this deferment if the dependent went back to school full time. The dependent referred to as the student in which the loan was applied for that persons education. In the event that the borrower went ton school full time, the borrower would apply for the regular in school deferment.
The dependent student enrolled at east half time deferment is again for the dependent student not the borrower. If the borrower of the loan went to school half time the borrower would apply for the regular half time in school deferment.
Dependent student in a full time rehabilitation training program deferment can be applied for by the borrowers if the dependent is in a full time rehabilitation training program.
