One student has been taken into police custody and another student has been rushed to Huntsville, Hospital after a shooting at Discovery Middle School in Madison, Ala. The Madison County Sheriff's Department has stated that the victim was shot in the head. The shooting took place on February 5, 2010 at about 1:30 p.m. Immediately the school was put on lock down by police who were already on campus and others who quickly responded to the scene. Directly across the street from the school was Fire Station 2 where fire fighters were able to quickly respond with life support equipment within a matter of minutes. The identities of the two students involved are still unreleased at this time as is the condition of the victim. The Madison County School system has confirmed that both students were in the ninth grade.

At a press conference held at 3:00 p.m. at Fire Station 2, Madison City Mayor Paul Finley said that his concern at this time was for the parents of all of the students of Discovery Middle School. Many parents, upon hearing about the shooting, went to the school to pick up their students, however emergency vehicles blocked the entrances as a perimeter had been set up around the school. It was a while before parents were allowed to pick their children up. When they were again allowed to enter the school grounds, the parents were allowed in one at a time to retrieve their children. Text messages and phone calls trickled out from many students, letting their frightened parents know that they were alright. Information is slowly trickling out, but Mayor Paul Finley has promised another more thorough press conference to be held at 4:30 p.m.
