The researchers at the University of British Columbia and the Harvard business School discovered that regardless of people's income, those who spend money on others were much happier than those who spent money on themselves.
In American society money is certainly overrated due to an overall consumer climate and media influence. The media makes us believe that we need a large house, BMW, 10 pair of jeans, and a Snuggie to be happy and satisfied with life. We spend all our savings and often get in debt to get these things. We get excited for a short period of time and then we want something else. We become slaves of our banks and credit card companies.
The most important rule for frugal living is the realization that life is not about having things. It is amazing how much money Americans spend for things they don't need. Some studies show that "shopping" is one of the most favorite activities of American women. Many cultures don't even have such a word as "shopping." People go to the store only when they need something, and not to hang out or check out the new collection. Interesting how culture defines the language.
Don't let the media trick you and make you buy things you don't really need. They will not make you happy.
There are many tips which will help you save money and live frugally. Don't go shopping unless you really need something. Don't bring credit cards with you - bring cash and take the exact amount you need. Learn how to cook - it is not only cheaper, but usually much healthier. Make your own cleaning and beauty products. Use the library to read magazines and books. Before going shopping, look for coupons online or in your newspapers and don't forget to use cash-back sites.
Remember that advertisers are paid to trick you that you need a myriad of things. Make it your job to be firm and honest with yourself. Remember that money can't make you happy. Unless, of course you spend it on others.
Live simply. Live happily.
