Studying Tips for Online Education Classes

Studying for online education classes differs slightly from studying for traditional classes in several ways, particularly if you intend to do your studying while connected to the internet. By setting the stage and sticking to your plans, studying for online courses offers added benefits, as well.

1. If your instructor has provided a study guide, fill it in with the correct answers. Make sure you know where to find all class materials and class resources in the online classroom. Bookmark any links the instructor recommends for the class. This often includes access to libraries and journals you may not normally have access to.

2. Highlight or take screen shots of specific material you find challenging. Create a study folder on your desktop and add new material as it is provided in the class. This allows you to study specific information without rereading material you do not need to review.

3. Set aside time for studying when you are alert and energetic. Choose the time of day when you can devote your energy to studying. Leaving studying for the end of the day, when you are tired only makes the task more difficult. Of course, if you are a night owl, late night studying may be the best time for you.

4. Create flash cards from the class material in your study folder. A simple slideshow with questions on one slide and the answers on the next allows you to review concepts and practice answering questions. A click of the mouse provides the correct answer. Break studying down into manageable chunks

5. Close all windows except your classroom. This means no checking email, weather, news or social networks. Check them before you begin studying and vow to wait until you are finished before checking them again.

6. Set instant messaging to away. Interruptions from friends will delay your studying and interrupt your workflow. Setting it to away, or turning it off completely, prevents you from giving in to the temptation to chat when you should be working.

7. Choose a quiet area away from distractions. Avoid TV or family conversations while studying for your class.

8. Turn off your phone. This means no phone calls and no texting. Concentrate your efforts on the work at hand. There is plenty of time for texting once studying is done, but for now, you attention needs to be on your class.

With a little self-control, and a study plan, studying for online education courses can be more efficient that studying for traditional classes, as all material is typically at your fingertips. Textbooks are often offered in digital format and can be searched quickly for information you need. A quick internet search can provide additional information when needed.
