Stuffy Nose Got You Down? How to Stop Sinus Problems Right in Their Tracks

Dan Maloney
I can't stand that time of year when my sinuses flare up. In the United States alone, over 40 million people are affected by sinusitis (the mediacal term for sinus problems) every year. Rather than hugging your box of tissues, maybe it's time to learn some tips on how to get rid of those sinus problems for good.

First let's talk about some natural methods you can use right now to help relieve sinus pressure:

1) Try rubbing the areas near your source sinuses. First, pressure thumbs firmly on both sides of your nose. Then you want to hold there for 15-30 seconds. This helps bring a fresh supply of blood to those areas.

2) Exercise, while having a number of other positive health benefits, can also help you with sinus problems. Light activity releases adrenaline, constricting the blood vessels. This can reduce swelling of the sinuses. So try to get out and run for a little bit if your sinuses are really swollen.

3) It goes without saying, that allergies can aggravate sinus issues. If you don't know what you're allergic to, see an allergen specialist and get tested. Then try to avoid environments which aggravate those allergies.

Here are a few home remedies you can try:

1) You want to try to drink extra liquids both warm and cold. Drinking fluids throughout the day helps flush out backed up mucus in your nose. Water can also help flush out bacteria which may be the source of sinus problems. You can try herbal or green teas if you'd rather have something with flavor.

2) One of the best things you can do for sinus problems is the eucalyptus steam inhalation method. Eucalyptus melts hard mucus, and the steam helps in the elimination of mucus. Inhaling steam helps keep the sinuses moist, which is a major key in keeping the sinuses and nasal cavities and good, working condition. If you don't have any eucalyptus, try just using a regular steam inhaler.

It's sinus problems are significantly bad, you can move on to the major medications that are used to treat this issue:

1) Nasal sprays can help ease congestion. But what most people don't know is that there is an alternative to nasal sprays that is just as effective. A saline nasal rinse is simple to do, and is extremely effective in curing symptoms of nasal allergies.

2) If you must use medications, try an over-the-counter decongestant or antihistamine.

3) Antibiotics can help cure bacterial sinusitis, but remember fungal or viral sinusitis cannot be cured by antibiotics.

In an extreme case, a qualified doctor can order sinus surgery. This would only be done if sinus problems continue for a very long time. Depending upon the severity of the issue, the recovery may be short or long.
