Stumler's Restaurant and Orchard: Good, But Not Worth a Special Trip to Indiana

Stumler's Restaurant and Orchard in Starlight, Indiana, is just a short drive from Louisville, Kentucky. Stumler's is just down the road from Joe Huber's Family Fun Farm and Huber's Orchard and Winery, both places that draw large crowds of visitors each year. Neither my husband nor I had ever been to Stumler's and thought it would make a great Sunday afternoon trip.

After navigating the curving and scenic country roads, one arrives at Stumler's and realizes that they have stepped into the country. The surrounding land is beautiful, and the sounds of the city are long gone. We were quite surprised by the empty parking lot at Stumler's when we arrived shortly after noon, there was only one car in the parking lot, and when we had passed Joe Huber's Family Fun Farm the parking lot was overflowing, and parking attendants were directing traffic.

Once inside we learned we were the only ones in the restaurant, and were greeted by a sign that says "Please seat yourself." Once we found a seat our waitress asked us what we would like to drink, and we were told to help ourselves to the buffet the restaurant serves on the weekend.

The buffet was small compared to what you see at most buffets today, there was an offering of several pasta salads, and fruit salads, as well as vegetable beef soup, in addition the main bar offered fried chicken, for which Stumler's is famous for, roast beef and gravy, sliced turkey, seasoned red potatoes, green beans, dumplings, and white beans. The one thing that was missing though was bread, no dinner rolls, biscuits or other bread was offered. For dessert there was a wide variety of scrumptious sweets to choose from including apple crisp, blueberry cobbler, and pumpkin pie.

The food was good, but not what we expected and it was nothing spectacular. The fried chicken was as promised, absolutely delicious but the rest of the food came off somewhat bland. I was raised in the country and grew up on home-country cooking as Stumler's food is suppose to be but the seasonings seemed to be missing from their food.

The service was decent, we had to keep asking for refills, but our waitress was very good about cleaning the dirty plates from the table almost immediately.

All in all, it was a decent meal, but I am not sure I would make the trip from Louisville to Starlight again to visit the restaurant. If you are in the area and looking for a place to eat, it's a good place to visit. But if you are making a special trip to visit it, it's not worth the drive, especially when you factor in the fact that you have to pass up Joe Huber's to visit it.

Our family celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary at Stumler's on Aug. 29, 2010. We chose the place especially because there was so much room for the adults and many outside games with equipment furnished for young and old alike. The decorations and table settings were beautiful. The food on the buffet was delicious. Many commented especially on the delectable chicken cordon bleu. The service was excellent too and the cost quite reasonable. Thank you Stumler's for the such a memorable afternoon in your lovely country setting.

My family ate there on Sunday 10/24 and I must say it was the worst food I have ever tasted. So nasty in fact that we couldn't eat it.Cost us 45.00 for 3 people and we didn't eat the stuff so that should tell you how NASTY it was.Stay away, stay far away.Better off eating fast food and it will cost you a whole lot less.

My family and I LOVE Stumlers. We go at least once a year wish it could be more. We also visit Hubers every year the same day. We have ate at both and we perfer Stumlers. The food their is awesome!!!! As a matter of fact we are planning to go tomorrow. The fact that there aren't usually alot of people there is an attration to us. We enjoy the quietness. Fighting a crowd is never attractive to me. The people who work there are extremely friendly and go out of their way for their customers. The food is very good everytime we go I am not sure what kind of taste buds that you have but???? WE LOVE it. I will never go to Huber's without visitin' Stumlers also. Thanks to all the folks at stumlers we love visiting them and are very happy to sink our teeth into their fine food!!!!
