Stunna Shades and Soy Lattes: A Surefire Guide to Catching a Glimpse of Hollywood's Rich and Famous

How to Spot a Star on a Budget

I expected my life to shine with no less gusto than the flash of paparazzi cameras from the second I booked my ticket to Los Angeles. I shrugged off the stale air and matte-faced flight attendant's phony smile and shimmied into my child-sized seat, still sticky from the last transcontinental flight out of which jaded, fresh air deprived Angelinos have unboarded just moments ago.

I pulled my oversized Nichole Riche shades over my star-struck ready eyes, zipped up my velour track suit and drifted into daydreaming about rubbing elbows with Paris at L.A.'s hottest nightclubs and grabbing sugar-free lattes with the Olsen twins at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf as I flipped through the superstar saturated pages of Hollywood tabloid magazines.

I soon discovered that a newcomer to the City of Angles doesn't only need to benevolent wisdom of a fairy godmother to navigate the congested labyrinth of freeways-spotting a celebrity in the capital of the entertainment industry can prove to be a cumbersome task, especially on a student budget. After a year of carousing L.A.'s extensive neighborhoods-everywhere from South Central to Beverly Hills-I've developed some (almost) cost-free tips to bumping elbows with big screen names.

Tip #1: Stars are busy people, and busy people run on caffeine (sugar, fat, carb and calorie free, of course).
Starbucks may reign as coffee royalty roping in business on every other street corner in most metropolises, but in L.A., a hip new café hits the scene each season with more buzz than the latest Louis Vuiton. This summer, the buzz seems to direct caffeine-craving celebs to Urth Caffé and, of course, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.

The drinks may be overpriced, but most locations (check out Westwood and Melrose) serve up prime people-watching spots along with their triple-shot espressos. Slip on some shades and chat up friends on your cell as you sip your iced tea and keep your eyes peeled for famous faces. Bonus hint: check out neighborhood joints in trendy Venice Beach and Marina Del Ray where resident move stars run to get their java fix.

Tip #2: Shopping never goes out of style.
If there's one thing stars never get tired of spending their cash money on, it's the latest tends. L.A. staple stores like Fred Segal and Kitson have received the celeb stamp of approval-their floors get more traffic from Manolos and Hollywould heels than the Oscar red carpet! Shopping and popular culture magazines, such as Lucky and Vanity Fair, can point you to the magasins-of-the-moment. If you're on a budget, keep in mind that you'll have to practice some serious self discipline in refraining from pulling out the plastic while perusing piles of cashmere cardigans and designed jeans.

Budding hot shops-and not along the posh Rodeo Drive-cater to big-spenders and their products carry hefty price tags. Take mental notes of the most popular trends so you can go home and update your wardrobe to include L.A. sleek a la Target. If you do feel the urge to dish some cash for a token or two, ask the sales attendant for a large shopping bag. Her snooty glare will be worth the nods of approval from personal shoppers running around with a grocery-list of celebrity-must haves as you bring a whole new meaning to window shopping with your logo-infused duds.

Tip #3: Being fit is fabulous, and famous people will do anything for a fad fab.
Do you actually believe that Hollywood's hip hot bod of the month actually got that rock-hard six pack and sleek physique by "eating whatever I wants and never working out...I'm just blessed to be naturally thin!" You don't need a Pellicano phone-tap to discover the truth: celebrities work their tiny little tooshes off to maintain their lean look, and by hitting local gyms and fitness spots you can catch a glimpse of them in their sweaty prime and get one step (or bicep curl, or down ward dog) closer to having a celebrity-caliber body yourself!

Equinox in Pasadena is a popular place to pump iron, and Sports Club/LA on Sepulveda is a always a posh scene. Crunch Fitness on Sunset is always a good bet and definitely a prime locale, and check out the buzz around 24-hour fitness facilities-celebrities' crazy schedules often leave strange hours free to hit the gym. Don't want to dish out dough for a day-pass? Hit the shoreline in Santa Monica or Malibu for an early morning jog to cross paths with some famous fitness fanatics.

Tip #4: Hit the books and head back to school.
L.A. college campuses are prime spots to snap a glimpse of movie star trailers, casually saunter through the background of a TV shoot as an extra or snag tickets to celeb-stocked events. TV shows and movies flock to University of Southern California (downtown) and UCLA (Westwood) to set the mood in college-centered flicks. Prime time soap "The O.C." shot at both as May sweeps swung into action and Jim Carrey was spotted working on his latest flick last spring.

Show promoters and also scour the central gathering spots at these campuses looking for young, hot co-eds to fill the seats at show tapings and award shows. Even once you grab a free ticket, you'll have to wait in line on location, so show up early and dressed to the nines. Both campuses also boast pro-bound athletes, so stay on the lookout for ripped dudes and dames in practice sweats.

So there you go. Four foolproof celeb-spotting tips. And even if they don't deliver, you'll have a great time soaking up the sun as you weave through the freeway traffic and wander L.A.'s hottest hoods. If all else fails, snap some star-worthy poses with that trendy Newport Beach babe strolling down Third Street Promenade or the Abercrombie hunk waiting your table at Morton's-you never know who's going to be the next big thing, and chances are, your friends back home won't know the difference!
